    Whale watching, Nanaimo

Amazing boat trip - I definitely recommend the open boat over the covered boat as it felt like we were so close to the whales (one surfaced right by our boat!). We saw a pod of 7 orcas and four humpback whales, as well as sea lions and seals. Our guide Desiree, was fun and informative, she was so knowledgeable and it was very clear how much she loves the whales! I would highly recommend this tour!

Response from the operator: Thanks for taking the time to leave a review! It's great to hear you enjoyed your time on the water with Desarae and the crew. She has a real passion for wildlife! It's great to hear that it came through during the tour. I'm glad you enjoyed your time with them and got to see all that wildlife. We will be sure to pass along your kind words to the crew. Thanks again for choosing us for your whale-watching adventure!

Excellent tour guides and magical Orcas

We went on an open boat tour on August 19th and saw 5 orcas and a humpback whale plus seals and a sea otter (on the dock)! Our tour guide Evan and driver Joseph really made the tour great. Evan was very knowledgable and approachable, he was giving us lots of interesting information about the whales we were seeing and was really friendly and upbeat! We also really liked the open boat, it’s fun and enables you to get to wildlife quickly. We much prefer it to other boats we have been on other tours. The tour was the highlight of our trip.

Response from the operator: Thank you for the review! It sounds like you were very lucky with the amount of wildlife spotted during the tour, and before that, with the otters on the dock! It's great to hear that you felt so comfortable during the tour with Evan and Joseph. We will be sure to pass your kind words along to them! Thanks again for choosing us for your whale watching adventure!

10 Orcas, 3 Humpbacks and a mess of seals, Amazing Adventure!

Amazing experience with our guide Hayleigh and our boat captain Rob. 2 adults (one with motion sickness) and 2 teenagers. Everyone had a fantastic time and were lucky enough to see 10 different Orcas (they had a tea party for us, very rare) and 3 different Humpbacks and a pile of seals. Even when you weren’t looking for spouts they scenery was gorgeous. My wife who has motion sickness was very concerned, but she had the time of her life. Would highly recommend to everyone, safe, punctual and great staff and the wildlife really put on a show for us.

Response from the operator: Hi Jon, thank you for the review! It's great to hear your family enjoyed their time on the water with us. I know motion sickness can be tricky! The open boat is great for that with all the fresh air, and it sounds like the wildlife kept things exciting for you. We will be sure to let Hayleigh and Rob know that you enjoyed the tour with them. Thanks again for choosing us!

Humpbacks & Orcas a great day out!

Ali and Captain Silvane were great we had a charter an the personal experience Ali gave us was second to none. She was incredibly knowledgeable and her ability to spot humpbacks & orcas from km away was astounding! Ali also was very respectful to the animals & the environment with conservation as well as tourism at the heart of our trip.

Response from the operator: Thank you for the review! It's great to hear that our staff's passion for wildlife shone through during your time on the water with them. Sounds like it was a great day, especially getting to see both species of whales! Thanks again for choosing us!

Whale Watching Nanaimo Open Boat Tour: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Vancouver Island.

How much does Whale Watching Nanaimo Open Boat Tour cost?

    +

Prices start at $183 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Vancouver Island usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Whale Watching Nanaimo Open Boat Tour take?

    +

Plan for about 4 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Vancouver Island is not rushed.

Is Whale Watching Nanaimo Open Boat Tour worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 78 out of 100, which we label "Strongly Recommended". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.9/5 across 209 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Vancouver Island, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Whale Watching Nanaimo Open Boat Tour?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Whale Watching Nanaimo Open Boat Tour suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 4-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Whale Watching Nanaimo Open Boat Tour?

    +

Around 73 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Vancouver Island can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Vancouver Island and add a light layer if any part of the 4-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Whale Watching Nanaimo Open Boat Tour start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Vancouver Island within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Vancouver Island?

    +

On Outty we rank every Vancouver Island experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Victoria Guided Food and History Tour, Whistler Tour from Vancouver + Sea to Sky Gondola + Shannon Falls, Victoria Whale and Wildlife Cruise. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Vancouver Island?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Vancouver Island?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
