Western Approaches offers a truly unique glimpse of a hidden, secret world which had an important place and role to play in war torn Liverpool. Now, the bunker is a hidden gem and an important time capsule left as it would have been in 1945. Visiting the bunker not only explains the vital work achieved within it, it also brings to life stories of the people who served there and even lived there. 80% of the 300 staff who worked there at any one time were women aged between 17-22 and we recognise the hard work, sacrifice and expertise these women had and the roles they performed. Walk through hidden rooms and discover the stories locked in the wartime bunker that protected the tactics and secrets of the British Armed Forces plotting to bulwark the Western Approaches and aid the Allied victory. The bunker is a museum but we fully encourage visitors to sit at the desks, touch the typewriters and telephones used by the staff to discover a truly immersive experience.

    What you'll see and do

    1. Western Approaches HQ Museum - The Battle of the Atlantic Experience

Western Approaches HQ is a secret WW2 bunker underneath Liverpool's City Centre, close to The Town Hall. Walk through hidden rooms and discover the stories locked in the wartime bunker that protected the tactics and secrets of the British Armed Forces plotting to bulwark the Western Approaches and aid the Allied victory. Glimpse the documents and tools the forces used to monitor enemy convoys and inform the British government of their findings whilst keeping their intelligence secret from the enemy, including one of only two surviving wartime phones which had a direct connection to the war cabinet in London. See where commanders and WRNS and WAAF personnel worked every day and night in the Map Room, the nerve centre of the Battle of the Atlantic. Here they monitored convoy routes and vital shipping lines, and pin-pointed enemy locations on a huge map laid across the table; total accuracy was necessary to enable the Royal Navy to contact and destroy the enemy. The Map Room which was the nerve centre of the bunker has remained exactly how as it was left when the doors were closed on 15 August 1945. Experience a self guided tour of the museum where you can walk through the corridors, sit at desks, play with typewriters and teleprinter machines, look at the telephone exchange and try on uniforms. There is also a room at the end of the tour where hot drinks are available at war time prices and there are traditional games to play and a film to watch about life in Liverpool during the war.

Hidden Gem Under the Streets of Liverpool

Fascinating and immersive look into history below the streets of Liverpool. The volunteers/ staff were friendly and so informative. The gentleman in the Operations Room was a wealth of information. My husband and I had a great chat with him. Love the way the tunnels were able to be restored and preserved so close to how they would have looked during it’s original operations.

    Would recommend

This place is a hidden gem and I would recommend anyone who is interested in the part Western Approaches and Liverpool played in the Second World War to pay a visit. Staff on the front desk are very friendly and welcoming and you can spend as much time as you want looking around at all the fantastic items and information provided.

    Very interesting visit.

Fascinating. It brought a reality to the firsthand stories that had been passed to me from relatives who were in the area during the war. Information boards were just right on detail, with plenty of supplemental information for deeper reading. Being self-guided and an all day ticket meant we could go out for lunch and return in the afternoon. We were there for 2.5 hours and could easilty have spent another hour there. I like guided tours and I may possibly go back for one of these that was avdertised near the exit.

Western Approaches Self Guided Tour: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Liverpool.

How much does Western Approaches Self Guided Tour cost?

    +

Prices start at $22 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Liverpool usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Western Approaches Self Guided Tour take?

    +

Plan for about 1 hour from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Liverpool is not rushed.

Is Western Approaches Self Guided Tour worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 85 out of 100, which we label "Exceptional". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.8/5 across 577 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable most highly reviewed in Liverpool, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Western Approaches Self Guided Tour?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Western Approaches Self Guided Tour suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 1-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Western Approaches Self Guided Tour?

    +

Around 202 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Liverpool can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Liverpool and add a light layer if any part of the 1-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Western Approaches Self Guided Tour start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Liverpool within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Liverpool?

    +

On Outty we rank every Liverpool experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Liverpool: "Blue Route" - City & Beatles Tour, Liverpool Ghost Walking Tour, Downtown Liverpool Walking Tour - In Spanish. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Liverpool?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Liverpool?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.

What is included in Western Approaches Self Guided Tour?

    +

Included: Each guest is given an identity card as their museum pass, identical to the original staff. Always check the voucher for the final list before you travel.
