    Wonderful day trip with Yonas

I recommend this tour with Yonas to anybody! He was an exceptional guide and took us for a great trip to the Wenchi Crater Lake. From the point of making the reservation to the actual day of the trip, he communicated with us on what to bring, what to expect, etc. He arrived right on time at 6 am to pick us up at our hotel and in general is just a very nice person to talk to. He explained lots of things about the local culture, recognized when we wanted to sleep, and drove very well. The crater lake itself was beautiful and we had a hike through the rift valley. It did rain a bit so we didn't swim in the small waterfall area or mud bath but it would have been nice to do so and enjoy the view. On our way home, Yonas dropped us and our friends off at each of our hotels. He even drove out of the way the next day to drop off an umbrella we had forgotten in the car. Overall it was a great day and a wonderful host.

Response from the operator: Thank you so much for your wonderful review and for recommending this tour! It was truly a pleasure spending the day with you at the beautiful Wenchi Crater Lake. We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed every part of the experience, from the communication before the trip to the scenic hike, cultural insights, and the breathtaking views of the crater. Although the weather didn’t allow for the waterfall swim or mud bath, we’re glad the day was still memorable and enjoyable. Your kind words about Yonas mean a great deal. Going the extra mile to ensure our guests have a comfortable, safe, and enjoyable experience—including returning your forgotten umbrella—was our pleasure. Thank you once again for your trust and support. We hope to welcome you back to Ethiopia for another unforgettable adventure in the future. Safe travels!

A great day in the countryside outside Addis

Yonas answered my enquiry straight away, professional and friendly. He helped shape our day tour according to our requests and accommodated our wishes, being flexible. He is a kind and insightful guide, hardworking and keen to please and help in whatever way possible. He organised the day effectively and spoke very good English. The day trip itself was fun. We saw baboons on the way, some carrying babies, and stopped for a traditional coffee and chatted to locals. When we arrived at the lake went to some viewpoints and then did the hike to the swing bridge, mud pools and waterfall with a local guide. The waterfall was from a warm spring and was lovely to stand underneath! After we hiked back up and then got a tuk tuk down to the lakes edge to board the traditional boat over to the island with Yonas. We had a walk around the island and then after we went for lunch at the nearby resort (not included). It has a beautiful view. We recommend Yonas for any tour in Addis- he also helped us plan a half day tour around the city.

Response from the operator: Dear Suzanne, Thank you so much for taking the time to share your wonderful experience with us! We truly appreciate your kind words about Yonas. Providing prompt communication, personalized service, and flexibility is something we always strive for, so we’re delighted to know your expectations were met. It’s fantastic to hear that you enjoyed the journey, from spotting wild baboons and experiencing a traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony to meeting local people along the way. We’re also glad you loved exploring the stunning viewpoints, hiking to the suspension bridge, mud pools, and warm spring waterfall with a local guide. These unique experiences make Wenchi Crater Lake one of Ethiopia’s most memorable destinations. The traditional boat ride to the island and the relaxing lunch with beautiful lake views are always guest favorites, and we’re happy they added to your day. Thank you for recognizing Yonas’s organization, professionalism, and English-speaking skills. Our team of experienced guides and well-trained professional drivers is committed to creating safe, authentic, and unforgettable experiences for every traveler. It was also our pleasure to help you plan your Addis Ababa city tour. We hope to welcome you back to Ethiopia soon for another adventure. Thank you again for your recommendation and for choosing our tour company!

Great day trip - highly recommend

I booked this tour right before leaving Ethiopia, and I’m glad I did. Yonas (our guide) tailored the experience to accommodate everyone’s interests in the group and he was also very knowledgeable about all aspects of the tour. The crater lake itself is stunning and there are a few activities to choose from that suite your interests - we ended up going to the market and hiking up and down the crater as well. I highly recommend this tour for anyone that is considering it.

Response from the operator: Thank you so much for taking the time to share this wonderful review! We’re thrilled to hear that you enjoyed your day trip to Wenchi Crater Lake and that booking it before leaving Ethiopia turned out to be a great decision. Yonas will be especially happy to know that his flexibility and knowledge made your experience even more memorable. We’re glad you loved the stunning scenery and had the chance to enjoy a mix of activities, from visiting the local market to hiking around the crater. Your recommendation truly means a lot to us. Beautiful location and excellently organised

This was a wonderful trip and organised brilliantly. Yonas was a knowledgeable tour guide and was extremely flexible to accommodate to our (changing!) needs. We did this as a day-trip and was advised to leave early so that we had maximum time to enjoy the crater and the beautiful surroundings. The drive from Addis is pleasant and you will pass through lots of greenery and small villages with ample photo ops. Having a local lunch and observing the infamous coffee ceremony was incredibly special. I wouldn’t hesitate to book future tours with Yonas!

Response from the operator: Dear Travelers Thank you for booking your trip with us.We are grateful for the 5 star review and we look forward to hosting you again.

Wenchi Crater Lake: Hike, Hot Springs & Local Market: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Addis Ababa.

How much does Wenchi Crater Lake: Hike, Hot Springs & Local Market cost?

    +

Prices start at $164 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Addis Ababa usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Wenchi Crater Lake: Hike, Hot Springs & Local Market take?

    +

Plan for about 10.8 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Addis Ababa is not rushed.

Is Wenchi Crater Lake: Hike, Hot Springs & Local Market worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 63 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.8/5 across 6 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Addis Ababa, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Wenchi Crater Lake: Hike, Hot Springs & Local Market?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Wenchi Crater Lake: Hike, Hot Springs & Local Market suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 10.8-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Wenchi Crater Lake: Hike, Hot Springs & Local Market?

    +

Around 2 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Addis Ababa can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Addis Ababa and add a light layer if any part of the 10.8-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Wenchi Crater Lake: Hike, Hot Springs & Local Market start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Addis Ababa within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Addis Ababa?

    +

On Outty we rank every Addis Ababa experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Addis Ababa Authentic Private City Tour, Addis Ababa Guided City Tour With Airport & Hotel Pick Up, Full Day Tour of Addis Ababa with Hotel Pickup and Drop-off. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Addis Ababa?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Addis Ababa?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
