What you get

    About this experience

Ride a guided tour of Waipio On Horseback Ranch, experience a traditional Ahupua’a (Mauka Makai). Horseback through a large coconut orchard, banana groves, and fishponds. We go alongside the historic Hamakua ditch and up into pasture blooming with purple flowers, guava and iron woods. There are baby sheep, horses, and calf. See native animals-wild boar, Hawaiian Ducks, donkeys, etc. Exotic fruits Kuini, such as Abiu, Salak, Mardrono, pitomba, Talisia, and Durio. Perhaps even sample those grown on the property. See the spectacular views, and landscapes, from fertile gardens to sweeping grasslands, and tree canopies. Learn Hawaiian culture and customs. Our guides are knowledgeable on the history of this Hawaiian Ahupa'a, a large socioeconomic, geologic, and climatic subdivision of land. Extending from the mountains to the sea with multiple water sheds. Each Ahupa'a provides wood for shelter and food like fish or taro. Unforgettable Ocean and Mountain Views

    What you'll see and do

    1. Guided horse tour of a traditional Hawaiian Ahupa'a. The tour begins at WOH Ranch, a working livestock ranch and farm operation sharing exclusive views of enchanting Hamakua. This scenic opportunity allows travel through a traditional land division (Ahupua’a) that stretches from the mountain to the ocean and is home to native flora and fauna. Surrounding gardens radiate fertility as you drive alongside fishponds full of Hamakua sunfish on your tour. Dwarf coconuts, breadfruit trees, kukui nut, sugar cane, taro, sweet potato and multiple varieties of heirloom bananas are just some of the plants you will see before riding alongside the historic Hamakua ditch. Our WOH Ranch Tour is ocean-bound; taste salt on the wind and hear waves pound against the sheer cliffs while we cruise under a canopy of ironwood trees near remnants of old Hawaiian settlements. At the ocean, we kick back and relax for a short break to appreciate the stunning Hamakua coastline. On a clear day you can see Maui!

Great for 1st time riders! Guides were informative regarding all the plants, fruits and animals. Patricia was very supportive for new riders. Views were spectacular!! Would definitely recommend! Only disappointment, thought we would sample more fruits grown on the farm. Fruits we did try were fresh and delicious!

    Amazing 🤎

Sean and Patricia were SO lovely, welcoming and professional from the get-go! We learnt so much from them, and they were even kind enough to let us all try their ranch-grown fruits and honey which was delicious!! The horses were so pleasant to ride, very well trained & patient, and the whole experience was a memorable one for sure. Even the drive up to the ranch from Kona was beautiful. Thank you guys for having us! I think this was my favourite activity on the Big Island… 🤎 Mahalo, til next time 🤙🏾

    Do it.

Incredible experience. Took my 70 year old mom and 8 and 11 year old kids. Our guides picked the perfect horses for each. As scenic as it gets. Informative and fun. Well worth the drive from Kona. Highlight of our trip, and we did a lot of excursions.

The scenery is beautiful, and our guides were extremely knowledgeable. The horses were calm, with great temperaments.

Response from the operator: Thank you for the kind review. We try our best it’s a beautiful tour. Please come back soon

Waipi’o on Horseback: Mountain Ocean Views Working Cattle Ranch: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Big Island of Hawaii.

How much does Waipi’o on Horseback: Mountain Ocean Views Working Cattle Ranch cost?

    +

Prices start at $160 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Big Island of Hawaii usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Waipi’o on Horseback: Mountain Ocean Views Working Cattle Ranch take?

    +

Plan for about 2 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Big Island of Hawaii is not rushed.

Is Waipi’o on Horseback: Mountain Ocean Views Working Cattle Ranch worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 78 out of 100, which we label "Strongly Recommended". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.9/5 across 307 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Big Island of Hawaii, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Waipi’o on Horseback: Mountain Ocean Views Working Cattle Ranch?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Waipi’o on Horseback: Mountain Ocean Views Working Cattle Ranch suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 2-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Waipi’o on Horseback: Mountain Ocean Views Working Cattle Ranch?

    +

Around 107 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Big Island of Hawaii can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Big Island of Hawaii and add a light layer if any part of the 2-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Waipi’o on Horseback: Mountain Ocean Views Working Cattle Ranch start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Big Island of Hawaii within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Big Island of Hawaii?

    +

The Big Island is volcano country: Hawaii Volcanoes National Park tours, Mauna Kea summit stargazing, night manta ray snorkels off Kona, Waipio Valley lookouts and coffee farm visits. Summit tours have real altitude rules, so we weight safety detail. On Outty we rank every Big Island of Hawaii experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include KONA Manta Ray Night Snorkel - FREE re-ride if no Sightings, Big Island in a Day: Volcanoes Waterfalls Sightseeing and History, Big Island: Captain Cook Snorkel On A Power Catamaran With Lunch. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Big Island of Hawaii?

    +

April to October, though the island runs year round. Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Big Island of Hawaii?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
