What you get

    About this experience

Hanoi during the Vietnam War: the dark side of its most famous monuments. Discover life under the planned economy, the fate(s) of the local people from both sides (the North and the South; and the story of the unification of Vietnam, a country once divided between the communist and anti-communist, on the brink of the COLD WAR. Our "stroll" will last about 2.5 hours, with a short taxi ride halfway through. The aim of my walk is to make you discover specific areas of Hanoi (far away from the tourist's eyes) in the light of aspects of our city's rich history that are rarely touched upon by guidebooks, with in-depth information (history buffs welcome) but in a relaxed and joyful atmosphere. A conversation, rather than a lecture! Places we will visit: - Cho Gioi: historic black market - Kham Thiem: the B52 memorial - Hanoi Train Street community Note: 20% of the profit will be donated to the Vietnam Association for Victims of Agen Orange/Dioxin and Blue Dragon's Children Foundation.

Start your visit in Hanoi with this tour!!

Kien was an amazing tour guide. We came hoping to learn more about life and history in Hanoi. The tour was informative and well structured, and he really presents information in a way that’s engaging. He was also very patient as well as receptive to our many, many questions. At the end, he provided recommendations for museums and dinner after learning what we were looking for and those also turned out to be spot on.

    Smooth

My guide Duong is one passionate guide. He gave us the history of Hanoi in a succinct manner and made sure we safely crossed the streets (the traffic can be hectic). Thoroughly enjoyed it!

Response from the operator: Xin chào Elvin, Thank you so much for your kind words! We're so happy you enjoyed the tour with Duong. He'll love hearing your feedback. Hanoi traffic can be quite an adventure, so we're glad you felt safe throughout. Hope to see you again soon! Thân mến, Công, Quang and Kiên

    A must do experience

This is one of the best and most interesting tours we’ve ever taken. Kien is so well educated on the subject & the area. We would recommend everyone take it. Learning to see the war from the Vietnamese perspective was so worthwhile.

Response from the operator: Dear Anita, Thanks so much for joining and leaving us a great review. We're so happy that you enjoyed the tour and appreciated the stories as well as the stories during the tour. We can't wait to see you again. Best, Cong

In-depth history tour in a less frequented part of Hanoi

Kien is a great storyteller and was able to bring more in depth insights about the Vietnam War and its impact on Hanoi. Really liked we were able to ask questions and go deeper than other guides normally venture. Had a great time and definitely recommend booking this tour if you’d like to understand things better.

Response from the operator: Xin chào Steven, Thank you for your kind review. We’re so happy to hear that you enjoyed the in depth insights and meaningful discussions with our host Kien. We hope to welcome you again in Hanoi. Thân mến, Công, Quang and Kiên.

    Excellent Tour

Kien started with a great synopsis of the actions leading up to the Vietnam/American war and then took us through the main events of the war itself. Then he took us for a walk through the Sky Market explaining how it came to be and how it works today. He followed this with a walk around other less visited areas of Hanoi. He gave excellent explanations for each point on the walk and delivered his talk with humour and sensitivity. We have taken a number of walking tours over the years and this stands out as one of the very best.

Response from the operator: Xin chào Clare, Thank you for your wonderful review. We’re very happy to hear that you enjoyed learning about the history of the Vietnam War with Kien and exploring both the Sky Market (Cho Gioi) and less visited areas of Hanoi. It means a lot to us that his explanations and storytelling made the experience stand out for you. We hope to welcome you again. Thân mến, Onetrip With Local Travel Company

Vietnam War: Uncovering Hanoi's Untold Stories: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Hanoi.

How much does Vietnam War: Uncovering Hanoi's Untold Stories cost?

    +

Prices start at $27 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Hanoi usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Vietnam War: Uncovering Hanoi's Untold Stories take?

    +

Plan for about 2.5 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Hanoi is not rushed.

Is Vietnam War: Uncovering Hanoi's Untold Stories worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 69 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 35 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Hanoi, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Vietnam War: Uncovering Hanoi's Untold Stories?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Vietnam War: Uncovering Hanoi's Untold Stories suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 2.5-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Vietnam War: Uncovering Hanoi's Untold Stories?

    +

Around 12 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Hanoi can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Hanoi and add a light layer if any part of the 2.5-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Vietnam War: Uncovering Hanoi's Untold Stories start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Hanoi within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Hanoi?

    +

On Outty we rank every Hanoi experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Ninh Binh Day Trip from Hanoi with Tam Coc or Trang An & Mua Cave, Ha Giang Loop Tour 4 Days 3 Nights with Ha Giang Vision Tour, Halong Bay Day Tour With Titop Island, Cave, Kayak & Lunch. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Hanoi?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Hanoi?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
