Bo Kaap food tour failure

I was very disappointed with this booking. I would have rated it a negative star if that was an option. I arrived at the location 15 minutes early. The guide did NOT show. I waited 45 minutes. I contacted Viator which could not get in touch with the guide but emailed them. An hour after my scheduled tour they contacted me and indicated to the fact that I was a solo traveler. I assume they make more $ if there is a bigger group. I would have appreciated if they had let me know that they did not want to do the tour then I would have arranged with another guide. I not only had to pay for an Uber there but then had to pay to be picked up again. I was only in Cape Town 2 days so my time was valuable and this was a huge waste of time. Do not book this tour. Unreliable.

Response from the operator: Anthony I am sorry but after missing so many Viator tours with negative reviews I am considering removing my listing but as a final attempt to solve this issue I will say something and if they remove my listing so be it. Viator and the traveller is at fault. When coming to a heritage community where people live travellers have to be more conscious and operate differently. Booking local tours using a US operator when you're a solo booker does not make sense. Viator takes 25%, pays out a week after and limits communication between the guest and traveller making it difficult to manage. I have requested that Viator look into improvements with their platform so hosts are notified when bookings are due but somehow this feature which all other OTA's have is to hard to incorporate. The second thing is that you did not book with me, I don't do or list tours for Sundays so please check your booking and direct your frustration to the right people and next time just search for a local guide in the area you looking to tour or find the name of the guide and search him, you will normally be able to contact guides directly. Most guides are happy to get paid on the day of tour so you don't have to worry about paying with a no-show. Its a more responsible way of travelling and remember convenience is destructive!

Bo Kaap with a local

The experience was excellent, we walked through the streets of Bo Kaap and learned a lot about the history, saw beautiful places, would recommend.

Response from the operator: Hello Isabel, thank you for your recommendation and for choosing us. All the best for your travels! With Salaams Zaki

Bo Kaap No Show

Not much to tell really, very poor communication with your operator, who turned out to be a no show. But really dissatisfied with Viator’s handling of the whole thing.

Response from the operator: Viator needs to take some responsibility for the booking not just the sale. As I mentioned to Gary I miss many Viator tours because of poor notifications and hidden bookings. I logged on twice that day to check for bookings and did not see any resulting in a customer having to wait for nothing in a location they dont know, I know that its stressful but always costs me in the end. I don't think a negative review for the host is fair, especially since I did offer an explanation and gave full a refund.

Unique Bo-Kaap Tour with Food Tasting, Western Cape: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Cape Town.

How much does Unique Bo-Kaap Tour with Food Tasting, Western Cape cost?

+

Prices start at $475 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Cape Town usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Unique Bo-Kaap Tour with Food Tasting, Western Cape take?

+

Plan for about 1.5 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Cape Town is not rushed.

Is Unique Bo-Kaap Tour with Food Tasting, Western Cape worth it?

+

It holds an Outty Ranking of 51 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.3/5 across 12 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Cape Town, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Unique Bo-Kaap Tour with Food Tasting, Western Cape?

+

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Unique Bo-Kaap Tour with Food Tasting, Western Cape suitable for kids and families?

+

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 1.5-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Unique Bo-Kaap Tour with Food Tasting, Western Cape?

+

Around 4 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Cape Town can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

+

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Cape Town and add a light layer if any part of the 1.5-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Unique Bo-Kaap Tour with Food Tasting, Western Cape start and how do I get there?

+

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Cape Town within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Cape Town?

+

On Outty we rank every Cape Town experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Cape of Good Hope and Boulders Penguins Day Tour from Cape Town, Table Mountain, Boulders Penguins and Cape point Day Tour, Wine Tour: Paarl, Franschhoek & Stellenbosch incl 3 wineries. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Cape Town?

+

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Cape Town?

+

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

+

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
