    Definitely try this tour!

This was a fun tour that gave us a chance to see an eclectic side of Tucson! The 4th Avenue and University area are home to many independent local owner operated restaurants which we love! Karen was a great tour guide; she was very knowledgeable about the area and provided us with a lot of interesting information about both the history of the area as well as the food we were sampling. With 6 restaurant tastings there was plenty of food to sample and we actually couldn’t finish it all! Highly recommend this tour and we would love to try their other tours.

Response from the operator: We’re so glad you enjoyed exploring the 4th Avenue and University area—it's one of our favorite parts of Tucson, especially with all the locally owned, independent restaurants that make it so unique. It’s great to hear that you appreciated the variety (and abundance!) of food—we definitely believe in “more food and more fun!” We’d love to have you join us on another one of our tours—each route offers a completely different experience!

Karen Brown delivered an outstanding experience on our Tucson Food Tour.

Karen Brown delivered an outstanding experience on our Tucson Food Tour. She was knowledgeable, engaging, and clearly passionate about the city. Beyond the great food stops, what really stood out was how she brought Tucson’s history and culture to life with interesting stories and insights along the way.

Response from the operator: We’re so glad you enjoyed not just the food, but the stories and insights along the way—that’s exactly what we strive for. We really appreciate you joining us and hope to see you again on another Tucson Food Tour soon!

Good food, but room for improvement

I've been on about a dozen different food tours in different states and countries and this one was not terrible but it wasn't really great. Our tour guide was good, but the structure of the tour didn't live up to what I've come to expect. My past experiences have been 8-10 people which is a nice size, but Tucson Food Tours runs up to 16 (our group was 15) and it just felt too big. The stops on the 4th St/Maingate tour were 4 stops for entrees and 1 dessert stop. Although the entrees were all different cuisines (Italian, Mexican, American, Indian), I missed having the variety (salads, sides, appetizers, unique drinks, etc) that has been my experience on other food tours. Allowing people to order alcholic drinks at every single stop also meant that we were waiting around for people to finish their drinks after each sample, instead of moving on right away -- or people were rushed through with their drinks. There could have been just a couple designated places for ordering extra things so it wasn't a different person holding things up at each stop. It would have been better if the tour guide had more info to share while we waited at each stop, but the only information presented was during short stops (5 or so minutes) between food places. While we were at the restaurants, the tour guide visited with us but we were all just hanging out, which is nice and all -- but on other tours I've been on, the chef or owner of the restaurant has come out to talk to us or there has been other stories or history shared while we are waiting for food. There seemed to be a lot of sitting around time as part of this tour. It took us 4 hours to go 5 stops. I've been on many 3 hour tours with 6-7 stops. And finally, the tour descriptions on the website didn't mention how far the walk is for each tour. This one is about 1.5 miles, which is on the long side compared to many other walking tours I've done, and we could have prepared better if we had known that in advance.

Response from the operator: Thank you for taking the time to share such thoughtful and detailed feedback—we truly appreciate it. We’re glad to hear you enjoyed your guide and the quality of the food, but we also understand your concerns and where the experience didn’t fully meet your expectations. While we do allow up to 16 guests to help support our restaurant partners and keep tours accessible, we understand that smaller groups can feel more intimate. It’s something we’re always evaluating as we continue to refine the experience. We also appreciate your feedback on the pacing and structure. The 4th Avenue/Main Gate route is designed to highlight a variety of locally owned, smaller establishments, and while that sometimes results in a more relaxed pace, we understand how the timing—especially with optional drink orders—can feel longer than expected. We do allow guests the option to purchase alcoholic beverages along the way because many of our guests are on vacation and want to fully enjoy the experience. We feel it’s important to offer that flexibility—just as we personally appreciate having the option to order a cocktail when we’re exploring a new city or taking a food tour ourselves. That said, your suggestion about limiting where additional items can be ordered is a great one, and we will absolutely take that into consideration as we continue to refine the flow of the tour. Regarding interaction at the restaurant stops, we want to share a bit more context. While some tours may include chefs or owners coming out to speak, we do not require that of our restaurant partners. We deeply value their time, and with our many years of service industry experience, we know firsthand that chefs are often in the kitchen cooking, prepping for a busy rush, or simply may not be front-of-house personalities. That’s where our guides come in—they serve as an extension of each restaurant, sharing the story, vision, and background so our guests still receive a meaningful and informative experience. We also appreciate your comments about the level of information shared during the stops. That’s helpful insight, and we will continue working on enhancing that balance between social time and storytelling throughout the tour. In regard to the walking distance, we do include both the duration and approximate walking distance on our website so guests can plan accordingly. We’re sorry that detail may have been missed prior to booking and appreciate you pointing out how important that is for setting expectations. We truly value feedback like yours—it helps us continue to improve and deliver the best experience possible. Thank you again for joining us, and we hope we may have the opportunity to welcome you back on a future tour.

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Tucson.

How much does Tucson Food Tours- Locally Owned 4th/University Walking Food Tour cost?

    +

Prices start at $92 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Tucson usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Tucson Food Tours- Locally Owned 4th/University Walking Food Tour take?

    +

Plan for about 4 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Tucson is not rushed.

Is Tucson Food Tours- Locally Owned 4th/University Walking Food Tour worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 76 out of 100, which we label "Strongly Recommended". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 116 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable food & drink in Tucson, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Tucson Food Tours- Locally Owned 4th/University Walking Food Tour?

    +

No. This experience is sold on a non-refundable basis, so only book a date you are confident about. Similar experiences in the city do offer free cancellation if flexibility matters more than price.

Is Tucson Food Tours- Locally Owned 4th/University Walking Food Tour suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 4-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Tucson Food Tours- Locally Owned 4th/University Walking Food Tour?

    +

Around 41 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Tucson can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Tucson and add a light layer if any part of the 4-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Tucson Food Tours- Locally Owned 4th/University Walking Food Tour start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Tucson within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Tucson?

    +

Tucson's list is Saguaro National Park drives and hikes, Sabino Canyon, Mount Lemmon sky island runs, Tombstone and Bisbee day trips, and Sonoran food tours through some of the best Mexican cooking in the country. Trail difficulty and shuttle logistics vary widely here. On Outty we rank every Tucson experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Tucson Food Tours- Locally Owned Downtown Walking Food Tour, Tucson Authentic Food Tour with 6 Dishes of Southwestern Flavors, Pistoleros Wild West Show Ticket, Tucson, Arizona. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Tucson?

    +

October to April, avoiding the summer monsoon afternoons. Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Tucson?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
