Beautiful Scenery, but an Unacceptable Safety Risk

We were really looking forward to this fjord tour but it ended up being incredibly disappointing. The issues started right at the meeting point—just an unmarked parking spot. Adding simple landmarks to the instructions (like "across from the Troll Museum and next to the Scandic Hotel") would have been immensely helpful. Once in the 7-passenger van, the experience felt less like a guided tour and more like a quiet Uber ride. In reality, it is a self-guided tour because the guide acted only as a driver and stayed in the car at almost every stop. We got a very brief explanation of how fjords formed, but that was about the extent of the commentary. We made quick 5-to-15-minute photo stops at Kaldfjord (Henrikvik parkering), Ersfjord, and Grotfjorden. Our guide rarely even mentioned the names of these stops; I had to use Google Maps and Wikipedia just to get some geographical context and history. There was no deep dive into the significance of these areas, just awkward silence for most of the drive. The most shocking and unacceptable part of the tour happened after our stop at Grotfjorden, when the van door broke and wouldn't close. Instead of securing a safe alternative, our guide decided to just continue the trip with the door wide open. For the next two and a half hours, we drove around with a gaping hole in the vehicle, exposing everyone to 10°C (or colder) winds. One passenger was seated directly next to the open van door, relying on nothing but their seatbelt to keep from falling out. It was a massive, appalling safety risk. We also skipped the Kattfjordvatnet stop entirely. When we finally reached Sommarøy, it felt incredibly rushed. Instead of the "picnic by the water" advertised in the itinerary, we were taken to a local supermarket (Matkroken) with one single-stall restroom for the whole group. Just waiting to use the restroom ate up about 15 minutes of our short 40-minute stop. We were given warm drinks and biscuits inside the supermarket—which we desperately needed after freezing in the open van. After that, the guide just stayed behind in the grocery store and simply pointed us to walk out to a beach next to an RV park and the dock in Sommarøy for photos. With the little time we had left, we had to rush to see the area on our own before being hurried back. There was no "professional photography" provided either, despite the tour description. The Norwegian fjords are undeniably stunning, but beautiful scenery cannot make up for a complete lack of basic safety, missing itinerary items, and zero tour-guide engagement. I highly recommend looking elsewhere.

    Really enjoyed this trip...

Really enjoyed this trip out into the beautiful fjords. Reidun was very accommodating and knowledgeable about the area and happy to stop for photos when we could. Seeing the reindeer was a bonus.

    Winter fjords

Great experience, even in winter. Christian is a polite, kind and reassuring carer. The route is scenically interesting and very beautiful. The vehicle is comfortable.
