About this experience
Step into the world of the Knights Templar on a full-day journey through Tomar and Almourol where history, legend, and architecture intertwine. Travel north from Lisbon to Almourol Castle, a fairytale fortress rising from a tiny island in the Tagus River. Glide across calm waters on a short boat ride and climb its ancient towers, once guarded by Templar knights during the Iberian Crusade — a campaign that helped shape the birth of Portugal. Arrive in Tomar, a land once given to the Templars by Portugal’s first king and the former headquarters of the Order, and explore its medieval streets and sacred sites. Visit the 12th-century Church of Santa Maria dos Olivais, resting place of Templar Masters. Climb to the majestic Convent of Christ, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Discover the Templar Charola (rotunda), and the iconic Manueline window — symbols of a legacy that outlived the Order itself. Enjoy free time to explore the Convent and its surroundings before returning to Lisbon.

Take me back in time (in a private tour) to the medieval times
This was one of the highlight excursions of our Trip. Around Lisbon did a great job explaining what we were seeing while giving us free time to discover the area on our own. Tomar and the castles are well worth the day trip, plus you avoid the crowds (not your typical excursion area). It was like being transported back in time.

Great knight Templar tour
João was very well-versed in the history of the Knights Templar’s. We felt p very comfortable throughout the trip never hurried. He was very professional, but yet friendly The local restaurant that Joao chose was excellent, with tupical local food. Definitely a five star ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ rating.

The passion of Portugal
We took a modified version of this tour with Orenna. While we enjoyed many tours in Portugal, Orenna was - by far - our guide who was most passionate about her specialist subjects, especially the Templars. We learned so much from her and had so much fun! We started the tour in Arrialos at the Tapestry Museum. We appreciated that Orenna helped us to engage with craftswomen making tapestries therein and then to find places to shop for modern tapestries to take home. During the drive to our next stop, Orenna taught us about the history of Portugal, the surrounding area, and the Templars. We were delighted by the stunning beauty of Almourol castle. Orenna gave us several suggestions for our lunch stop in Tomar and then showed us around the fascinating town. We visisted the church, synagogue, and the castle and enjoyed, too, the beautiful scenic homes and streets. Our next stop was the gorgeous Batalha church. Finally, Orenna ended the tour just across the street from our hotel for the evening with a visit to a historic shop and a taste of ginja. A sweet and tasty finish to a wonderful day!

Why this scores 68
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
Templar River: Tomar and Almourol Private Tour: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Lisbon.
How much does Templar River: Tomar and Almourol Private Tour cost?
+
Prices start at $68 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Lisbon usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Templar River: Tomar and Almourol Private Tour take?
+
Plan for about 8 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Lisbon is not rushed.
Is Templar River: Tomar and Almourol Private Tour worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 68 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.9/5 across 8 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Lisbon, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Templar River: Tomar and Almourol Private Tour?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Templar River: Tomar and Almourol Private Tour suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 8-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Templar River: Tomar and Almourol Private Tour?
+
Around 3 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Lisbon can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Lisbon and add a light layer if any part of the 8-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Templar River: Tomar and Almourol Private Tour start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Lisbon within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Lisbon?
+
On Outty we rank every Lisbon experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Lisbon City Center Tour - The Unmissable Lisbon, Sintra Private Trip from Lisbon Customizable Dreamlike Experience, True 4Hour Private Tuk Tuk Tour: Discover Lisbon with a Local!. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Lisbon?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Lisbon?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
