Top bird guide for Parque Nacional Cajas

When you get up before dawn to visit El Cajas National Park outside Cuenca, you want the day trip to go as planned. It did when we booked with Edison Juca and Polylepis Tours. With decades of personal knowledge, Edison (Eddy) knew every spot for birds and views. His field expertise as a bird guide and naturalist is backed by education/training. Under lousy conditions (rain, fog and chilly cold) we saw nearly 3 dozen species, including target birds (and we heard the noisy Turquoise jay). Cajas Park is notorious for its moody weather, but Eddy anticipated a downpour in time to find us cover so that we could continue birding, We expect that any tour with Polylepis Tours would be equally successful.

Response from the operator: Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience! We're delighted to hear that, despite the challenging weather, you had such a rewarding day exploring El Cajas National Park with Eddy. His passion, extensive local knowledge, and expertise in birding and natural history truly make every tour special, and we're thrilled that he was able to help you spot so many species while adapting to the park's ever-changing conditions. Your kind words and recommendation mean a great deal to us. We hope to welcome you back for another adventure with Polylepis Tours, perhaps under sunny skies next time!

Tour operator not up to Viator standards

This a five hour tour and went all around sights near El Teide as expected. They used 2 vans for our English tour and we were in one with only Spanish driver. We were directed to the wrong pick up spot and wanted over 20 mins to find the driver. Then he drove like a racer up the narrow mountain roads, passing cars as he went.

Response from the operator: Thank you for your comments. We are 100% sure you are referring to a different tour. This does not reflect us at all. We use one minivan and the guide is always Ozzi. Most likely you are posting this to the wrong tour provider.

Great trip with spectacular views, well worth the money!

Very interesting trip, really enjoyed it. We saw some beautiful scenery and stopped off at a nice cafe /shop. The only negative was that being in the back I couldn't hear what the guide was saying to the people sitting next to him. They seemed to be getting more info than the rest of us. Maybe some kind of speaker system would help. Over all though a great trip.

    Great tour and excellent guide!

What a great experience! Booked easily through TripAdvisor. Pick-up location three minutes from hotel was sent by WhatsApp the evening before. Pick-up was punctual in a clean, modern vehicle. Picking up other guests was quick because of the small group size. Some great stops at Vila Flor and el Pino Gordo. But the highlights were really the Roques de Garcia and the lava fields. At the Roques de Garcia we had a full hour to walk around, enjoy the views, explore the trails and visit the visitor centre/museum and cafe/gift shop. The lava fields are also really impressive - photos just don't capture it. Our guide, Ozzie, was just fantastic and really made the experience special. Multilingual (English, Spanish, Dutch and more) and with an amazing knowledge of both the history of the island and the science of the volcanoes. This really made it special as we got so much in-depth information that I'm not sure you'd get with other tours. The tour maximum size is 8 people, which is a great size for a personal experience. Space-wise in the van, we were 7 people and it was fine. But with 8 it would be a bit tight as the front seats are only really for 1.5 people. Also, if you're in the back you can't see the views so well when driving along because of the tinted windows. But plenty of great sites to see at the stops! Overall, a really great tour, very reasonably priced for the fantastic experience you get, and totally recommended! Thank you Ozzie!

Teide National Park for smaller groups: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Tenerife.

How much does Teide National Park for smaller groups cost?

    +

Prices start at $83 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Tenerife usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Teide National Park for smaller groups take?

    +

Plan for about 4 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Tenerife is not rushed.

Is Teide National Park for smaller groups worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 70 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.7/5 across 90 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Tenerife, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Teide National Park for smaller groups?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Teide National Park for smaller groups suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 4-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Teide National Park for smaller groups?

    +

Around 31 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Tenerife can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Tenerife and add a light layer if any part of the 4-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Teide National Park for smaller groups start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Tenerife within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Tenerife?

    +

On Outty we rank every Tenerife experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Whale watching & listening Eco-Catamaran Tour with Snacks &Drinks, Group Surfing Lesson at Playa de las Américas, Tenerife, 3-hour Whale and Dolphin Watching and Listening Tour. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Tenerife?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Tenerife?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
