Fun experience of traditional life and food.

This tour is very different from the average cooking class. Arrival is by buffalo cart and canoe. The food is prepared and cooked in the traditional way over wood. Patrons are invited to join in with the preparation and cooking - even to sing the traditional song for each activity. The resulting meal is genuine Sri Lankan village food. Great fun.

Mediocre tour, probably scam operators

Regarding the tour itself: it was . . . fine. You get what you pay for in this situation. It's not an actual village tour, but rather a recreation of traditional activities done in traditional villages, and I feel like if I had known that in advance it would have managed my expectations a bit better. Everything is super fast and you do feel rushed the whole time. The woman who did my cooking demonstration told me I didn't tip her enough, which, fine, I was willing to give her more, but I did find that pretty off-putting. But all that being said, it's a nice enough way to see some of these traditions, as long as you know what you're getting yourself into--that is to say, that it's a recreation rather than the genuine article. The 1 star review is really for the operator, Kashyapa Tours, who I think are likely scammers. Transportation is supposed to be included (they say they can pick you up from any of the area hotels); an hour before the tour began, I still had heard nothing from them by phone, email, or whatsapp. I messaged to ask if it was happening and got back an "oh yeah, we'll send a tuk-tuk, what time do you want it?" I found this odd since I had already told them the time, both through tripadvisor and through whatsapp. Eventually I was picked up. Did the tour, came back, my tuk-tuk driver was waiting for me. All good. Except then when he drops me off at my hotel he demands payment for the whole roundtrip plus waiting time! I told him that Kashyapa was paying for it and he just shook his head and kept demanding it from me. I whatsapp'd and called Kashyapa about this; no response. They totally ghosted me. I eventually negotiated the driver down just to pay for the return trip. But man, what an unprofessional experience. Bottom line: I thought the tour itself was mediocre, but I was admittedly expecting something different from what I got based on the description. If a recreation is up your alley, it does its just well enough! But if you want to do the tour, just go straight to the direct operators. They have a stand on the main street of Sigiriya. Don't bother with Kashyapa, these guys are terrible.

No interest

Completely irrelevant. The carriage driver keeps asking us for money, there is a lot of waiting, the boat is not there, this tour is totally uninteresting

Must do experience whilst in Sri Lanka

Our driver guide suggested this tour and we were not disappointed it was a wonderful experience and we learnt a lot about SriLankan family life and cooking. The experience started with a TukTuk drive to the village, my husband even got to try driving the Tuktuk! We then enjoyed a cooking lesson and got to try some of the techniques ourselves. A delicious lunch with plentiful food was then served before enjoying a boat ride on the a nearby lake which was beautiful. The experience ended with a trip in an Ox cart back to our starting point. A truly wonderful experience we would highly recommend.

Small Group Sigiriya Village Tour with Typical Lunch: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Sigiriya.

How much does Small Group Sigiriya Village Tour with Typical Lunch cost?

+

Prices start at $30 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Sigiriya usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Small Group Sigiriya Village Tour with Typical Lunch take?

+

Plan for about 2.5 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Sigiriya is not rushed.

Is Small Group Sigiriya Village Tour with Typical Lunch worth it?

+

It holds an Outty Ranking of 51 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (3.8/5 across 12 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Sigiriya, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Small Group Sigiriya Village Tour with Typical Lunch?

+

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Small Group Sigiriya Village Tour with Typical Lunch suitable for kids and families?

+

The operator sets a minimum age of 8. Older children generally do well here, and families should factor in the 2.5-hour running time when deciding.

How far in advance should I book Small Group Sigiriya Village Tour with Typical Lunch?

+

Around 4 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Sigiriya can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

+

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Sigiriya and add a light layer if any part of the 2.5-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Small Group Sigiriya Village Tour with Typical Lunch start and how do I get there?

+

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Sigiriya within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Sigiriya?

+

On Outty we rank every Sigiriya experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Organic cooking class sigiriya (kumara & family), Private Jeep Safari at Minneriya National Park to Visit Elephants, Sajee’s Place Cooking Class sigiriya. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Sigiriya?

+

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Sigiriya?

+

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

+

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
