What makes this tour unique is the sequence. It’s not random stops on a map—it’s a gradual transition from north to south, from cultivated land to raw coastline, from movement to stillness. You don’t just visit the Libyan Sea; you earn it, descending through Kourtaliotiko Gorge before reaching the palms and river-meets-sea landscape of Preveli Beach. It also balances contrast with precision: the openness of Preveli, the enclosed clarity of Kalypso Beach, and the grounded simplicity of lunch in Plakias. Small group size keeps the rhythm controlled—no waiting for crowds, no overpacked timing. It’s structured, but it breathes. That’s rare.

Preveli Palm Forest
One of the most exotic beaches in Crete, Preveli Beach is famous for its unique palm forest and river lagoon. Spend 1.5 hours relaxing, swimming in the crystal-clear waters, and walking along the river under the shade of the lush palm trees.
120 minutes here · Admission included
Kalypso Beach
Kalypso Beach near Plakias is not your typical sandy stretch—it’s a dramatic, narrow cove carved between steep rock cliffs, where the Libyan Sea turns deep turquoise and crystal clear. The setting feels almost secret, protected by nature itself, with calm waters ideal for swimming and snorkeling. There are no long promenades or noisy beach bars here. Just raw landscape, sharp rock formations, and water so transparent it leaves no room for excuses—you either dive in or you regret it later. It’s one of those south Crete spots that feels earned, not staged.

Beach excursion
The friendly driver took us to three different locations. The first stop at Kourtaliotiko had probably the most impressive scenery although the area itself is not that big with many visitors at the same time. The Preveli beach was overcrowded and a long walk down and up numerous stairs. The last stop at Kalypso beach was very nice although also overcrowded with no availability to put down a towel or reserve a sunbed. It is a lot of driving and not more than 45 minutes to max an hour stop at the various locations if you consider the hike down and up. I would recommend booking an excursion that offers to take the the group to Preveli beach with the boat from Damnoni back and forth, at least during the hotter part of the season.
Response from the operator: Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We're pleased you enjoyed the scenery at Kourtaliotiko Gorge and the beauty of Kalypso Beach, and we'll be sure to pass your kind words on to your driver. Preveli is one of Crete's most popular beaches, especially during peak summer, so crowds can unfortunately be unavoidable. We appreciate your suggestion regarding the boat from Damnoni, and it's something we continually evaluate depending on the season and operating conditions. Our aim is to combine some of South Crete's most spectacular locations into a full-day experience, and your feedback helps us improve it. We hope to welcome you back to explore some of Crete's lesser-known hidden gems next time, where the crowds are often much smaller.

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Heraklion.
How much does Small Group: Kourtaliotiko Gorge, Preveli/Kalypso Beach & Plakias cost?
+
Prices start at €40 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Heraklion usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Small Group: Kourtaliotiko Gorge, Preveli/Kalypso Beach & Plakias take?
+
Plan for about 8 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Heraklion is not rushed.
Is Small Group: Kourtaliotiko Gorge, Preveli/Kalypso Beach & Plakias worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 54 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (4/5 across 1 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Heraklion, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

+

How far in advance should I book Small Group: Kourtaliotiko Gorge, Preveli/Kalypso Beach & Plakias?
+
Around 0 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Heraklion can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Heraklion and add a light layer if any part of the 8-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Heraklion within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Heraklion?
+
On Outty we rank every Heraklion experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Knossos - Zeus Cave - Old Traditional Villages-Olive Oil Factory, Knossos & Lasithi Plateau: Zeus Cave, Villages, Olive Oil Tour, Quad Safari: Off-Road Day Tour with Dinner & Transfers. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Heraklion?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Heraklion?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
