Do Not Recommend – Extremely Disappointing and Inconsiderate Experience
I strongly advise against booking this experience. I specifically booked a sloth tour and traveled all the way from La Fortuna by Uber (costing around $30 each way) only to be told upon arrival that there were no sloths present. This is completely unacceptable, unreliable, and incredibly inconsiderate to customers who make significant effort and expense to get there. Instead of any meaningful resolution, they immediately tried to push me into a completely different tour that I had no interest in. I did not sign up for that, and it felt like they were counting on me settling for something else once I was already there. I declined, as it was not what I paid for. Now I’m forced to wait four full days for a refund. In total, I’m out approximately $60 in Uber fares plus the $35 tour cost — with nothing to show for it. This whole situation was ridiculous, poorly managed, and a complete waste of time and money. Save yourself the frustration and do not book this. If you do decide to go anyway, confirm multiple times in advance that sloths are actually present before making the trip. Very disappointed and will not be returning. Put me in a horrible mood to start my day.
Response from the operator: Hello Megan, Thank you for sharing your experience. We sincerely apologize for the disappointment and frustration this situation caused. Our Sloth Tour takes place in a natural environment where the animals are wild and free-ranging. While sloths are seen very frequently, we can never guarantee their presence, as their movements are completely unpredictable and out of our control. Unfortunately, on the day of your visit, no sloths were observed during the tour. We understand that you traveled a considerable distance and incurred transportation costs to visit us. Our team offered an alternative tour so that you would still have the opportunity to enjoy a wildlife experience during your visit. However, we fully respect your decision to decline, as it was not the specific activity you had planned for. Regarding your refund, it was processed immediately according to our policy, although the time required for the funds to appear in your account depends on the banking institution and payment provider.

Excellent Ethical Sloth Viewing
Excellent educational tour with Bradley. We booked the sloth tour but got to see a few of the animals they are taking care of that can’t survive in the wild. Highly recommend if you would like to see sloths in a more ethical way.

Great ethical way to view sloths in La Fortuna
This was a fantastic tour of a wildlife sanctuary and the free roaming sloths, birds, and other animals that reside on the property. Our guide, Bradley, was very friendly an and knowledgeable and had a telescope as a well as a device to attach to take pictures. We booked the sloth tour and saw sloths as well as a cayman, several species of birds, dart frogs, and an iguana. We also explored the captive animals in the facility’s care. You can tell the facility is very ethical in their practice, none of the sloths are captive and come and go on their own free will.

Sloth tour
We got to see several sloths, some fairly close! We also saw other wildlife (broad billed heron, caiman, basilisk lizard). Our guide was knowledgeable and friendly. Highly recommend!

Why this scores 62
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
Sloth Tour: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for La Fortuna.
How much does Sloth Tour cost?
+
Prices start at $25 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in La Fortuna usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Sloth Tour take?
+
Plan for about 1 hour from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in La Fortuna is not rushed.
Is Sloth Tour worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 62 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.8/5 across 70 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable culture & history in La Fortuna, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Sloth Tour?
+
No. This experience is sold on a non-refundable basis, so only book a date you are confident about. Similar experiences in the city do offer free cancellation if flexibility matters more than price.
Is Sloth Tour suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 1-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Sloth Tour?
+
Around 25 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in La Fortuna can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in La Fortuna and add a light layer if any part of the 1-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Sloth Tour start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central La Fortuna within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in La Fortuna?
+
On Outty we rank every La Fortuna experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Upper Balsa River White Water Rafting Class 3/4 in Costa Rica, North Fields Cafe: Craft Specialty Coffee and Chocolate Tour, Canyoning Adventure Rappelling Waterfalls in Arenal Volcano. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit La Fortuna?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in La Fortuna?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
