Our 1.5km Trail offers one of the best opportunities to observe sloths in their natural habitat. During this journey, we'll be witnessing various animals in their natural state, and that's why our guide will be responsible for showing us the best way to enjoy them without causing stress or disruption to their daily lives. Both two- and three-toed sloths are now common on our property, which we've reforested and protected for many years. This is the fruit we want to share with you—a haven for sloths in the heart of Fortuna de San Carlos. Our guide will share impressive details about these animals, concluding the tour with a small tasting of artisanal sugarcane juice and a traditional tortilla-making class with Doña Elith. Not to mention, a visit to her medicinal plant garden. Undoubtedly, it's a complete experience of nature and culture in one place.

So Much More Than a Sloth Tour

Our sloth tour with Mar was genuinely one of the most special experiences of our entire trip to Costa Rica. We obviously came hoping to see sloths, but we ended up seeing and learning about so much more wildlife along the way. The property itself was beautiful, and we loved getting to observe everything in its natural habitat. Mar was absolutely incredible. She was so knowledgeable about the wildlife, plants, and ecosystem and somehow managed to spot animals we never would have noticed on our own. She brought a spotting scope so we could get amazing close-up views of animals high in the trees, and she even helped us take photos through the scope. Some of our favorite wildlife photos from the entire trip came from this tour! We saw sloths, frogs, birds, reptiles, and so much more. Finishing the tour by making tortillas and trying fresh sugarcane juice was such a fun addition and made the whole experience feel like so much more than simply going out to spot sloths. But as amazing as the wildlife was, Mar is what made the experience truly unforgettable. She was incredibly warm, funny, kind, and personable, and we clicked with her almost immediately. She has a way of sharing everything she knows without it ever feeling like a lecture - it just felt like exploring with a very knowledgeable friend. Sometimes you meet someone while traveling who leaves a lasting impression on you, and Mar was absolutely one of those people. We genuinely feel like we made a friend for life and know our paths will cross again someday. We came for the sloths and left with one of our favorite memories from Costa Rica. We cannot recommend this experience, and especially Mar, enough. Pura vida! ❤️

    Excellent Tour and Guide

We decided to do the sloth tour because it was a rainy day and there was no animal activity at our hotel. We took the 11 am tour with Mar. She was very nice, entertaining, and friendly. We saw a few sloths (both 2 toed and 3 toed) two of which were moving around! We saw birds, a caiman, agoutis, frogs, a lizard, and got a lesson in leaf cutting ants. We then juiced sugar canes and drank some. Then we made tortillas and had them with a special rice, cheese, and bread pudding, along with passion fruit juice. It was a great time.

This is why we came to...

This is why we came to Costa Rica! Sloths! We literally had not even started the tour yet and our guide, David, was already pointing out a sloth to us. David was very knowledgeable about the sloths and other animals we saw on the short hike. Crushing sugar cane to drink and making tortillas were an added bonus of this tour, but also a lot of fun. Highly recommend!

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for La Fortuna.

How much does Sloth Tour in La Fortuna and Tortillas Cooking Class cost?

    +

Prices start at $38 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in La Fortuna usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Sloth Tour in La Fortuna and Tortillas Cooking Class take?

    +

Plan for about 2 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in La Fortuna is not rushed.

Is Sloth Tour in La Fortuna and Tortillas Cooking Class worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 82 out of 100, which we label "Exceptional". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 130 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in La Fortuna, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Sloth Tour in La Fortuna and Tortillas Cooking Class?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Sloth Tour in La Fortuna and Tortillas Cooking Class suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 2-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Sloth Tour in La Fortuna and Tortillas Cooking Class?

    +

Around 46 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in La Fortuna can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in La Fortuna and add a light layer if any part of the 2-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Sloth Tour in La Fortuna and Tortillas Cooking Class start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central La Fortuna within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in La Fortuna?

    +

On Outty we rank every La Fortuna experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Upper Balsa River White Water Rafting Class 3/4 in Costa Rica, White Water Rafting Class II and III, Authentic Coffee and Chocolate Tour at North Fields. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit La Fortuna?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in La Fortuna?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
