Your adventure will begin with a guided driving town tour of Skagway and continue up the White Pass on the Klondike Highway. Along the way your guide will regale you with history about the Klondike Gold Rush and the natural history of the area. From the trailhead you will spend the next 2 hours hiking through the beautiful alpine forest surrounded by the towering snow capped mountains of the White Pass. Your naturalist guides will stop frequently along the way to share their knowledge about the native flora, fauna, and to describe the amazing glacial history of Alaska. Each group is outfitted with binoculars to maximize your opportunities to see up close the spectacular mountain and river scenery. Midway through the hike you will be treated to a delicious snack at the final breathtaking overlook with incredible views of the Skagway valley, White Pass, and the Lynn Canal.

Knotted Ropes and a Mushroom!
This was the best port activity of my entire week in Alaska! The hike is exactly as described. We learned about the local flora and fauna, and it was strenuous. Our guide, Troy, was knowledgeable, friendly, and capable. He was frank with the three of us about the difficulty of parts of the trail, and supportive and encouraging during the hike. He didn’t let his concern about our perceived hiking ability (which may have been based on our footwear choices: hiking shoes, Crocs, and loosely-laced-but-not-really-tied) show hardly at all. Troy is basically a mountain goat, so we did slow him down a bit, but we had a wonderful time and the beauty of the trail and the fantastic views were well worth the effort. And I spotted the first Fly Muscaria (Amanita Muscaria) of the season!

Definitely go on this hike with T---ROY!
We had an absolute great time with Troy (T----ROY). We were two 60 somethings and a 20 something that were a tad worried about the "strenuous" description, but we handled this hike like bosses. (However, my quads were screaming for two days after!) It was absolutely gorgeous. We were lucky to have only three people in our hiking party so we were able to ask a lot of questions about the flora and fauna, as well as share our knowledge. We finished the hike a little early, but it was an excellent length. This hike is great for anyone who is confident in their balance and enjoys a little challenge.

Not easy but worth the effort.
When you read the word adventure make sure you realize this is not your normal path hike. You will be using ropes and your hands and knees to make it up this mountain. We loved our guide Issy and would not have made it without her encouragement.

Easy Hike (I’m jokin, I’m jokin 😉)
My husband and I really enjoyed this hike while stopping in Skagway during one of our cruise ports. There were only ~10 people plus the guides, Scotty and Caden, so it was a chill, fun group. The tour included pickup from the cruise pier, ~15 minute drive out to the start of the hike, the hike itself with good photo opportunities, and a drive back to either the cruise pier or downtown area. The hike was challenging considering how short it was. I logged only about 1.3 miles in total and over 700 feet of elevation gain. I’m not an avid hiker, so I felt this was a good challenge for me, but I would not recommend this unless you’re in decent shape, don’t have any injuries, etc. It did involve really steep steps, uneven terrain, and utilizing a rope to help pull yourself up at times. A good pair of hiking shoes would be beneficial on this excursion as well. Be aware of all of this before booking! It’s not a summit to the top of a mountain but it’s not a leisurely stroll through the rainforest either. The views were absolutely beautiful! I wish I could’ve seen even more but I’m glad I was able to do just a little bit during my quick stop in Skagway. Also wanted to shout out our tour guides again, Scotty and Caden, who were both friendly and hilarious. I think we definitely got each other’s humor, which made the tour that much more enjoyable. Finally, I wanted to give another shout out to Alex McBride: DO YOUR DISHES!!!! 🤪
