Loretto Chapel
Loretto Chapel was built in 1878 by Archbishop Lamy to accompany the Sisters of Light Loretto Academy. The Gothic-Revival chapel was inspired by Saint Chapelle in Paris, which was built by architect Antoine Mouly, who did the restoration of chapel that was patterned for King Louis IX in Paris. Legend has it that the 360-degree staircase built in the chapel between 1877 and 1881 had no visible means of support. Today, it is known as the Miraculous Staircase that St. Joseph the Carpenter had built. The Chapel was closed in 1968 and deconsecrated by the Catholic Church and is now run a privately owned museum.

Burro Alley
Burro Alley is a small street connecting Palace Avenue and San Francisco Street. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, vendors who sold salt from the Galisteo Salt Basin and firewood from surrounding mountains would tie up their burros there to rest. While the animals recuperated, the vendors would frequent the local saloons and brothels. The gambling hall that was run by María Gertrudis Barceló, known as Doña Tules, was at the corner near Palace Avenue.

Very Informative Outdoor Tour
Ana is a respected author and historian who has much to share about the history of Santa Fe. We learned alot on our 2 hour walking tour and considered time spent with her to be a great resource to begin our time in Santa Fe, giving us a better understanding of the city and its various inhabitants and cultures over time. As a historian, very much of her tour emphasizes and includes the dates and timelines of the various parts of Santa Fe history...somewhat difficult to retain when presented in great depth over the course of 2 hours. What was not understood when we booked the tour is that this tour is outdoors only and excludes any chance to even quickly visit the interiors of any of the highlights of this city tour......... Therefore, after our tour was over, we returned to re-trace the walking tour Ana had conducted, in order to be able to walk into the historic places of worship she had shown us earlier, for an even more memorable and beautiful view and understanding of Santa Fe history.

The highlight of my Santa Fe trip
Ana is an amazing tour guide. She really brought the history of Santa Fe to life over the course of about two hours. The time flew by because of such great pacing and interesting facts and commentary. We were able to sit a few times during our walking tour and also ask questions at the end of each tour segment. This was the highlight of my trip to Santa Fe. So glad I took this tour!

Great intro to Santa Fe
This is an excellent tour and intro to the history of Santa Fe and the Plaza and surroundings. Ana is extremely knowledgeable. Why wouldn’t you want a historian who has written several books about Santa Fe giving you a walking tour.
