Sanfins and Briteiros Celtic Hillforts Minivan Private Tour

So . . . would you like to spend a day with an archaeologist?

My wife and I find the ancient Celts fascinating - and we were in Porto. So we specifically sought a guided daytrip to some of the nearby Celtic settlements. We didn't rent a car and we wanted more context both for the Celtic sites themselves and the culture of Portugal. Adriano's tour was perfect for us. Adriano first drove us to the Briteiros Hillfort, discussing along the way the history of the celts on the Iberian peninsula. Adriano was an excellent guide, careful to lay out the evidence and give context for what we "know" and what we "think" is probably true. This created an atmosphere of exploration and discussion, and not one of lecture. It was a very refreshing way to visit an ancient site. Next, we had an amazing lunch at a small, traditional Portuguese restaurant down some tiny road connected to another tiny road. It was beautiful, and a great way to experience a bit of modern Portuguese culture outside of Porto. Finally, we visited the Sanfins Hillfort. This Hillfort has one house rebuilt in the last few years, creating an astonishing representation of how ancient people may have lived. Adriano discussed heavily the interplay between the Iberian Celts and the Romans, and the influence the Romans had on the Hillfort layout and architecture. As a special treat - pay attention to the baths/saunas at both of these sites. It's amazing how these ancient people controlled water. A few tips - wear sunscreen - the Iberian Sun is . . . bright. And the terrain is uneven so wear good shoes. And book in advance to ensure Adriano is available. My wife and I had a great time. Spending a day with an archaeologist and historian was a great way to explore both an ancient culture and a modern culture.

One of the highlights of our stay in Portugal!

Adriano is an amazing guide. He’s a historian and a truly gifted storyteller, knowledgeable and clearly passionate about what he does. The tour was very well organized, from pick-up to drop-off, and it was the perfect way to discover the Castro culture and the influence of the Roman Empire on it – the roots of an important part of Portuguese identity. Adriano explained their history so vividly that it was easy to imagine daily life there centuries ago, and to see the history of Portugal – even the origin of the country’s name!! – in a completely new light. On top of the history, the natural beauty of the sites is striking. It’s hard to believe these places are still not widely known, but that also meant we had them almost to ourselves. As a plus, Adriano also took us to a lovely restaurant serving traditional Portuguese food! Book it – you won’t regret it! A memorable experience. Thank you, Adriano!

You should try it.

It was a great experience. The places we visited were a surprise to us, even being Portuguese. The guide, Adriano, had a very good knowledge of the history and some details that made the all experience even better. I truly recommend this tour to anyone who wants a fun day with extra knowledge.

Tour of Castos

The tour was great. We visited several castros that surprised us how well they were preserved and the recreations of the houses. The guide Adriano was very friendly and with many knowledge of the history of Portugal and the past of his country. Also the place we ate loved, very good food.
