This walk is about its turn: a downtown being reclaimed street by street, now that the country reports one of the lowest homicide rates in the Americas. Nine stops cross the compact heart of the Centro Historico, a little over a kilometre and about an hour. From the civic plaza ringed by palace, library and cathedral, along the reclaimed pedestrian streets to the grand coffee-era theatre, the restored independence square, and a raw concrete church that turns into rainbow light inside. Each stop is something this city lost and chose to build back. Because it is self-guided, the walk is yours. Start whenever you like, go at your own pace, linger or move on. Palacio Nacional De El Salvador
A 1911 palace paid for by coffee wealth that once held all three branches of El Salvador's government. Its four ceremonial halls are known only by their colors. Now a museum.
