What you get

    About this experience

Before Salida became one of Colorado's favorite mountain towns, it was a rough-and-tumble railroad community where outlaws, gamblers, prostitutes, saloon keepers, and lawmen shaped daily life. Walk the historic streets where notorious characters made their mark as you uncover stories of gunfights, frontier justice, brothels, political corruption, train robberies, and the colorful personalities who helped build—and sometimes nearly destroy—the town. Visit the locations where history unfolded while hearing true stories drawn from newspapers, court records, and years of original local research. Equal parts Wild West history and unforgettable storytelling, this walking tour reveals a side of Salida that most visitors—and many locals—have never heard. If you enjoy authentic Western history, colorful characters, and surprising stories, this tour brings the Old West back to life.

    Need a more reliable player

The player app was terrible. It basically has a mind of its own. Would stutter, stop and start with no control by the user. It also quit working about halfway through so we went back and redid part of the trail to try to get it to catch up. It made it further and then started playing two tracks at once. We enjoyed what we did hear, but it was too much like work.

A Great Tour/ History of Salida

A great fun and interesting into a town we had no idea of the history. The hour and half went by quickly and now we want to go back and investigate some of the stores we heard about! Definitely worth the money!!!

Response from the operator: So happy you had a great experience!

    Fantastic experience. Our...

Fantastic experience. Our guide literally wrote the book on the history of Salida. Tons of surprising facts and tidbits and some wonderful stories of some of the town’s legendary residents. Great time.

Response from the operator: Thank you for the positive review! I'm so happy you had a great experience. You guys were a blast.

Great stroll through history and downtown Salida.

After moving in and out of Salida, Colorado for the past twenty-five years, I decided to finally take one of the historic tours of Salida. I met my guide, Steve, on F Street bridge. Upon my arrival I was told that I was the only one to sign up for that days tour and would be getting a private tour. Amazing! Instead of rescheduling , the tour proceeded as planned. I had a great time and learned so many things about Salida. Steve was knowledgeable, funny, pleasant. Even though the information he has probably talked about hundreds of times, he still made it seem interesting and fresh. If you have visitors coming to Salida this tour is an enjoyable way for them to learn some facts about the town and area. If you are a local, I’m sure you too would learn a fact or two that you didn’t know before. Thanks, Steve!

Response from the operator: Thank you for such a detailed, positive review. We're happy you had a great experience and hope to see you on another tour in the future.

This Guy Knows What He Is Talking About

Steve wrote the book on the history of Salida. Literally. Wonderful tour. Well worth the price. Park in the open field on the right after you go over the bridge. Get there early. Recommend to go the Little Red Hen Bakery if you get there early and have a piece of pastry. The Bakery is around the corner. Make a morning out of it and get a parking place.

Response from the operator: Thanks for buying the book and for the great review.

Salida Outlaws, Whores & History Tour: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Buena Vista.

How much does Salida Outlaws, Whores & History Tour cost?

    +

Prices start at $45 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Buena Vista usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Salida Outlaws, Whores & History Tour take?

    +

Plan for about 1.5 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Buena Vista is not rushed.

Is Salida Outlaws, Whores & History Tour worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 69 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.8/5 across 40 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Buena Vista, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Salida Outlaws, Whores & History Tour?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Salida Outlaws, Whores & History Tour suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 1.5-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Salida Outlaws, Whores & History Tour?

    +

Around 14 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Buena Vista can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Buena Vista and add a light layer if any part of the 1.5-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Salida Outlaws, Whores & History Tour start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Buena Vista within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Buena Vista?

    +

Buena Vista is Colorado's rafting hub: Browns Canyon National Monument trips from mild to class IV, plus hot springs, zip lines, ATV tours and fourteener access. On Outty we rank every Buena Vista experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Half Day Browns Canyon Rafting Adventure, Brown's Canyon Half Day, Browns Canyon National Monument Whitewater Rafting. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Buena Vista?

    +

May to August, with the biggest water in June. Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Buena Vista?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
