Ruin Bars (and more)!!
Our guide Rudy gave us a wonderful glimpse at the unique phenomenon that is the Budapest ‘ruin bars’. We visited three very different locations and learned a great deal about the history of the area and how these bars came to be. They had been described to us as ‘hipster bars’. They are that, but their story is so interesting. These pubs, are unique bars in old buildings, mostly in the Jewish Quarter, were created in reclaimed courtyards and buildings that had fallen into disrepair in the post war era. They’re known for their eclectic & quirky décor and lively atmosphere. They were built using discarded furniture & wacky decor (and a lot of ingenuity!), using everything from old car parts to discarded furniture to craft supplies. They have become so popular that other European cities are copying this model. It was a fun evening and although the bars are mostly supported by a younger crowd, we certainly weren’t the only ‘over 50’s’ enjoying them. Thanks Rudy for showing us your city at night and for your enthusiastic sharing of its history and culture!!

Informative & fun personalised tour
Rudi was a excellent guide, the tour took us through 3 very different ruin bars. This enabled you to experience a variety of influences and the evolution of the ruin bars. Rudi was open and shared his personal experiences growing up here. He has extensive knowledge, having generational connections in Budapest, which made the night enriching, and gave us a deeper appreciation of the historical and contemporary issues Hungarian, people face. All done over a few drinks in a relaxed and fun manner. Thanks for a great night, Rudi.

Excellent evening spent learning from Rudi
Very glad to have booked this tour of the Jewish Quarter and the Ruin Bars. Rudi gave us his local insight of growing up in Hungary and Budapest from the 1990s through to the present day and all of the changes that have happened, whilst also providing the background to the area, its history, and the growth and development of the Ruin Bars. It's been the best of the walking tours we've done on our time here, the most friendly, detailed, and insightful. Thoroughly recommend it. Thank you Rudi :o)

I wish i could say...
I wish i could say something nice. But AFTER we had to pay, the tour went from 6:30 to 8:30 pm, meaning 11:30 pm end time. We had other plans for the next day and thats just too late. And too late to get a refund.
Response from the operator: Dear Cynthia, The tour includes 3 famous bars, while our guide explains the stories of the ruin bars and the entire artistic neighborhood. Out of the 3 bars, 1 was closed due to a movie shooting at the original time. Since it is a must-do on our tour, we informed you that the tour would start at 8:30 pm instead of 6:30 pm, and we asked if this was a problem for you. You initially accepted the change. However, just an hour before the tour was due to start, you sent us a message saying that you would not be coming. Everyone who has participated in the tour so far has given us 5 stars, so we truly wish you could have joined us instead of exchanging messages in reviews. :(

Local, authentic and cosy
Through Rudy we were shown local and authentic places in a cozy Mood far away from mass tourism. There was also a lot to learn about Hungarian history. Perfect guide for a cozy pub evening.
Response from the operator: Thank you so much! Danke :)

Why this scores 61
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
Ruin Bars Tour (Culture, history, and drinks) PROMO PRICE: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Budapest.
How much does Ruin Bars Tour (Culture, history, and drinks) PROMO PRICE cost?
+
Prices start at $55 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Budapest usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Ruin Bars Tour (Culture, history, and drinks) PROMO PRICE take?
+
Plan for about 3 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Budapest is not rushed.
Is Ruin Bars Tour (Culture, history, and drinks) PROMO PRICE worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 61 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.6/5 across 8 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Budapest, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Ruin Bars Tour (Culture, history, and drinks) PROMO PRICE?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Ruin Bars Tour (Culture, history, and drinks) PROMO PRICE suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 3-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Ruin Bars Tour (Culture, history, and drinks) PROMO PRICE?
+
Around 3 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Budapest can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Budapest and add a light layer if any part of the 3-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Ruin Bars Tour (Culture, history, and drinks) PROMO PRICE start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Budapest within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Budapest?
+
On Outty we rank every Budapest experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Budapest City Landmarks Walking Tour in 2 Hours, Countryside Half-day Gastro-Wine Tour from Budapest Meal & pickup, Budapest free walking tour: Parliament and Shoes Memorial. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Budapest?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Budapest?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
