We explore one of Buenos Aires' most fascinating neighborhoods through the lens of art, architecture, and history. Throughout the walk, we'll focus on Retiro's artistic side, exploring how this historically residential and commercial neighborhood has continually reinvented itself while maintaining its deep connection to the city's artistic heritage. Along the way, we'll visit hidden art galleries tucked away in unexpected places, discover remarkable architecture and secret corners, and explore key moments in the history of Argentine art and architecture. What makes this tour unique is its perspective. Rather than following a traditional sightseeing route, you'll experience Retiro through the eyes of someone deeply connected to the local art scene, revealing a side of the neighborhood that most visitors—and even many locals—never get to see. If you're a curious traveler who enjoys uncovering hidden gems and discovering the stories behind a city, this tour is for you.

What you'll see and do
Edificio Kavanagh
We begin in front of the Kavanagh Building. Here we introduce ourselves and I provide context about the neighborhood and its importance within the world of art and architecture in Buenos Aires. I share the famous legend surrounding the construction of the Kavanagh and talk about the building as a piece of cultural heritage.

Plazoleta Alberto Ginastera
At this stop, we focus on the sculpture Nosotros Afuera by Federico Manuel Peralta Ramos. Through this work, I talk about his eccentric personality, his belief that art and life were inseparable, and his connection to the Di Tella Institute in the 1960s. This stop helps us understand the experimental spirit of the period and of this iconic Buenos Aires artist, and how Retiro became the stage for a bold and provocative avant-garde.
20 minutes here · Admission included
We visit a contemporary art gallery where we explore a current exhibition. Here we analyze the artworks and reflect on how they engage with social, political, and economic contexts. I also explain the role of galleries within the art system: how they represent artists, how art fairs and the market function, and how galleries differ from museums. When possible, we talk with gallerists or curators, creating a close and dynamic experience.

In front of the former Di Tella Institute, I explain why this place marked a turning point in Argentine art. We discuss the international context of the 1960s, the Cold War, and the cultural influence of the United States in Latin America. I introduce the so-called “Di Tella Generation” and recount key episodes and milestones of the artistic avant-gardes of the 1960s. This stop helps us understand how art, politics, and power are always deeply connected, and how Retiro was the heart of that cultural revolution—and how it is once again becoming a site of artistic experimentation today.

In a second gallery, we delve into other contemporary proposals. We analyze materials, scale, curatorial decisions, and modes of display. We reflect on how current artists engage with—or challenge—the Argentine modern tradition and the experimental legacy of the 1960s. This is a moment to train the eye and to understand that every exhibition is also a position taken within the art field.

Galerias Pacifico
We end our walk in this 1891 building, inspired by the great Parisian department stores. In the late 1940s, its dome was painted by some of the most important artists in the country. Among them, Antonio Berni, together with Spilimbergo, Castagnino, and Urruchúa, created the monumental murals that now crown the central space. Standing beneath this dome allows us to understand that art does not belong only to museums: it also inhabits commercial buildings, transitional spaces, hidden galleries, and everyday places. Retiro, though residential and financial in character, holds layers of artistic history within its architecture. From these murals to the avant-gardes of the 1960s and contemporary art galleries today, art appears woven throughout the neighborhood and its history.

Highly recommended: Another way to look at the city
The proposal is not only innovative but also attractive in information. Tamara provides the tour complementing with data in a very generous way! It integrates the participants and helps us to reach the kitchen of the artists, often with the artists themselves present! I highly recommend! it is the most original and pleasant thing I participated in in years! And another way to look at this city that is SO BEAUTIFUL! PS: It is the 2nd tour I do with Tami and I know more will come!

Very well put together the route, as within the same theme the proposal was varied and we could know spaces that we would not have known otherwise.

Very interesting tour and tour. Tamara guides you through the art to know more about the history of some spots in the city and you are going to know galleries or studios of very great artists. Places you don’t even imagine exist and are an amazing oasis with art, shows, exhibits and more. Talks with the artists, tell you more about their works and with the guide and comments that Tamara is also sharing during the tour. Highly recommended. Something different to know another part of Buenos Aires

Why this scores 73
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
Retiro: Art, architecture, history and hidden gems: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Buenos Aires.
How much does Retiro: Art, architecture, history and hidden gems cost?
+
Prices start at $70 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Buenos Aires usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Retiro: Art, architecture, history and hidden gems take?
+
Plan for about 3 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Buenos Aires is not rushed.
Is Retiro: Art, architecture, history and hidden gems worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 73 out of 100, which we label "Strongly Recommended". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 25 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Buenos Aires, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Retiro: Art, architecture, history and hidden gems?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Retiro: Art, architecture, history and hidden gems suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 3-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Retiro: Art, architecture, history and hidden gems?
+
Around 9 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Buenos Aires can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Buenos Aires and add a light layer if any part of the 3-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Retiro: Art, architecture, history and hidden gems start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Buenos Aires within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Buenos Aires?
+
On Outty we rank every Buenos Aires experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Argentine Cooking, Wine & Beef Tasting at Argentine Experience, Historical Sherpa Food Tour of San Telmo with Street Food, Drinks, Cooking Class with Empanadas Steak & Flan by Argentine Experience. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Buenos Aires?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Buenos Aires?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.

Where is the meeting point for Retiro: Art, architecture, history and hidden gems?
+
