Awesome day of Whale (and Bear) Watching
Couldn’t recommend them highly enough - if you’re in the Juneau area or stopping thru the port on a cruise, I would highly encourage booking with them. We booked the private whale excursion for 6 of us (me, wife, 2 kids, two grandparents) - Captain Carl was great and reached out to me via text - the pickup was very smooth - he does a great job of budgeting time and made sure we had the ability to stop and get snacks or use a restroom on the way to the boat if we wanted to - we also stopped by a fish ladder on the way to the boat for about 10 mins and got to see the salmon run which was really neat to see. The boat was great and Carl knows all the spots to go to to see humpbacks. Having a private boat for the six of us was way better than being on a crowded boat with a bunch of people we don’t know. We got to see bubble feeding 3 or 4 times and 5 beaches as well as sea lions. The other great thing that Carl did was provide us the option of extending after the whale watching with another member of his crew, Jason, to do a nature walk, in the hopes that we might see some bears (and eagles and the glacier - time permitting). I’m so glad we took him up on that. Jason was awesome and his enthusiasm for nature and knowledge about the area was infectious. We did a light hike thru the rainforest (where he educated us about the rain forest and plants, edible berries, etc). We finally came to a beautiful creek/river/lake where he likes to go to spot bears. We waited patiently for about 15 minutes and sure enough a bear came out and we got to see it snag a salmon right in front of us - it was incredible. From there he made sure we had just enough time to take in the Mendenhall glacier from his favorite spot. This was awesome as it was a spot away from the tourist center and we were literally the only 7 people (us 6+jason) in sight - the views were incredible. He got us back to port with about 30 mins to spare. Again - if you are in Juneau, I can’t recommend them highly enough - they maximized our time and made for a day that my family will remember forever - every minute that you can avoid spending in that ultra touristy port and doing something like this instead is $ well spent.

Amazing last minute Excursion
We had a dogsledding excursion cancel on us at the last minute. I reached out to Carl and he planned the best while watching and sightseeing excursion. We spent an amazing day with Carl and Jason and made so many memories. He planned a whale watching, lunch at a local brewery, and then we went sightseeing with Jason. We spent seven hours exploring Juneau and could not have been more pleased. We saw whales, eagles, bears, seals, sea lions, etc. So glad our excursion got canceled. I don’t think we could have topped our time with these guys. Thank you for the unforgettable day in Juneau.

Whale watching and more!
Carl and Jason were amazing!! Our whale tour with them was a highlight of our time in Alaska. They went out of their way to make it a special experience for us and even stopped at the grocery store, Mendenhall Glacier, and the state Capitol on the way back (important spots for our group :) Can’t recommend them enough!

Outstanding private whale watching tour for family!
Fantastic private tour with an amazing whale watching experience! Jason was an outstanding driver for us showing us around Juneau, and Captain Carl did an excellent job taking us out on the water to see humpback whales. We always felt like we were in good hands, and the whales came right up to our boat — it was breathtaking!

Why this scores 55
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
Private Whale Watching Experience (Up to 6 Guests): questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Juneau.
How much does Private Whale Watching Experience (Up to 6 Guests) cost?
+
Prices start at $1495 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Juneau usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Private Whale Watching Experience (Up to 6 Guests) take?
+
Plan for about 3 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Juneau is not rushed.
Is Private Whale Watching Experience (Up to 6 Guests) worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 55 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 14 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Juneau, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Private Whale Watching Experience (Up to 6 Guests)?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Private Whale Watching Experience (Up to 6 Guests) suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 3-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Private Whale Watching Experience (Up to 6 Guests)?
+
Around 5 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Juneau can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Juneau and add a light layer if any part of the 3-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Private Whale Watching Experience (Up to 6 Guests) start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Juneau within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Juneau?
+
Juneau runs Mendenhall Glacier trips, whale watching in Auke Bay, helicopter glacier landings with dog sledding, and rainforest hikes. Most tours are timed to cruise ship windows, so we weight clear duration and pickup detail. On Outty we rank every Juneau experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Juneau Wildlife Whale Watching, Juneau Wildlife Whale Watching & Mendenhall Glacier, Mendenhall Glacier Lake Canoe Tour. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Juneau?
+
May to September, peaking for humpbacks in June and July. Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Juneau?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
