    What you'll see and do

    1. Economy Candy

Meet your NYC-licensed guide in front of Economy Candy, on the corner now known as Morris 'Moishe' Cohen Way — honoring the founder of NYC's oldest candy shop. The perfect starting point to dive into the roots of the Lower East Side. Arrive 15 minutes early if you'd like to browse their selection of hundreds of candies from around the world!

      10 minutes here

    2. Beastie Boys Square

Get ready for a vibrant mural tribute to the Beastie Boys, created by artist Danielle Mastrion in the very neighborhood where the trio grew up. It's one of the Lower East Side's most beloved pieces of street art — and a can't-miss photo moment on your tour.

      10 minutes here

    3. Did you know that the Lower East Side is celebrating the photobooth — a New York invention with roots dating back a century, right here in Manhattan!

      Pass by without stopping

    4. Tenement Museum

By the turn of the 20th century, this part of the Lower East Side was the most densely populated place on Earth. Every wave of immigration left something behind — bagels, synagogues, the Henry Street Settlement — and you'll hear the story of the Moore family at 97 Orchard Street, and how Irish immigrants helped shape the neighborhood

      10 minutes here

    5. Along the way, you'll spot murals by legends like Hektad, Kobra, and Kenny Scharf, stumble upon a Soviet-era Lenin statue hiding in plain sight on a rooftop, and pass a boutique hotel hidden down a graffiti-covered alley that curates its own rotating street art collection — and that's only scratching the surface.

      20 minutes here

    6. Essex Market

Next, we'll step into Essex Market — the neighborhood's historic covered market, given a stunning revamp in 2019. There, you'll taste a sample smoked salmon, a Jewish culinary tradition that has flavored the Lower East Side for generations.

15 minutes here · Admission included

    7. First Park

Discover a community garden curated by a local art director since 2008, who invites street artists from around the world to transform its walls with ever-changing murals.

      15 minutes here

    8. Freeman Alley - Graffiti

Our last stop takes you to one of Manhattan's most iconic street art alleys — raw, uncurated, and covered in decades of stickers and pasteups. Add your own sticker to the wall using supplies provided by your guide. Then head to a nearby building for the opposite experience: a fully curated collection of 21 murals spanning a 20-story stairwell.

      30 minutes here

    9. Your guide will get you access to a rooftop with wide views over the city — since the Lower East Side has no skyscrapers of its own, nothing blocks the skyline beyond. Your guide will stay with you for 30 minutes, though you're welcome to stay longer on your own. Any drinks ordered on the rooftop are not included and are at your own cost

The best way to discover the Lower East Side

A truly fantastic and insightful tour of the Lower East Side! I've lived in New York City for 20 years, yet I discovered so many hidden gems that I never knew existed thanks to Laurene. She also shared fascinating stories and fun facts about the neighborhood, along with excellent recommendations for bars, restaurants, and local shops. I highly recommend this tour to both visitors and locals—you'll come away with a whole new appreciation for the LES!

Response from the operator: Hi Kiwigirl04, Thank you so much for this — it truly made my day! Giving a fresh perspective on the Lower East Side to someone who's lived in New York for 20 years is exactly what I love most about leading this private walking tour. I'm so happy the hidden gems, the local stories, and the bar and restaurant recommendations stood out to you — and that the rooftop with its Manhattan skyline views was the perfect way to end the evening. Thanks again for taking the time to write this. It was a pleasure showing you around, and I hope to welcome you back on one of our other New York City tours soon! Laurene

I would sign up to all of them!

I’ve done 2 different tours with Laurene and they’ve been a delight! Whenever I have friends visiting from France, I can’t wait to have them see the city through the eyes and stories of Laurene. As an immigrant in NY who’s been here for 13 years, it’s as enjoyable as for tourist friends! Each tour makes me love the city even more. And notice and understand places I took for granted.

Response from the operator: Thank you for your feedback on our tours in New York City. For a small local tour operator it means the world.

Private Walking Tour in the Lower East Side with rooftop access: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for New York.

How much does Private Walking Tour in the Lower East Side with rooftop access cost?

    +

Prices start at $299 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in New York usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Private Walking Tour in the Lower East Side with rooftop access take?

    +

Plan for about 2.5 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in New York is not rushed.

Is Private Walking Tour in the Lower East Side with rooftop access worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 47 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 3 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in New York, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Private Walking Tour in the Lower East Side with rooftop access?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Private Walking Tour in the Lower East Side with rooftop access suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 2.5-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Private Walking Tour in the Lower East Side with rooftop access?

    +

Around 1 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in New York can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in New York and add a light layer if any part of the 2.5-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Private Walking Tour in the Lower East Side with rooftop access start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central New York within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in New York?

    +

New York has more bookable experiences than any other city on Outty, and the quality spread is brutal. Observation decks are commoditised, so we score them on timed-entry reliability and sunset slots. Food tours and borough walks are where the ranking really separates operators, and the top scores in the city all come from small-group guides. On Outty we rank every New York experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Grand Canyon VIP Helicopter Tour, Half-Day Bus Tour of NYC Top Highlights, NYC Bus Tour of Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens: Art, Food & Sports. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit New York?

    +

September to early November, and late April through June. Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in New York?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
