The Palácio de Valenças was built in the second half of the 19th century by the Lisbon merchant António Ferreira dos Anjos. Ricardo Anjos Jardim, heir to the palace, sold it to the Municipality of Sintra in 1936. From 1939 the palace was adapted to a library, museum and historical archive. Today, it is in the Sala da Nau of the building that the Municipal Assembly meets.

Built in 1922, with a project by Master José da Fonseca, the Moorish fountain was built with the aim of enhancing the entrance to the village and “dignifying the most appreciated water in Sintra”. The widening of the road, in 1960, forced the dismantling of the fountain, being rebuilt 20 years later, not in its original place, but in the heart of Volta do Duche. In the revivalist architecture of the fountain, the great arch stands out, in which three other arches appear topped by neo-Moorish tiles, standing out in the center, the stone of arms of the municipality.

Camara Municipal de Sintra
The Town Hall building is strategically located between the two neighborhoods of Sintra: Vila Velha and Vila Nova da Estefânia. It was built between 1906 and 1908. The facades are enlivened by neo-Manueline windows and an imposing pyramidal roof tower covered in tiles, decorated with the cross of Christ and the national coat of arms culminating, at the top, with the armillary sphere.

Park and National Palace of Pena
We will pass through the gardens and the palace. It represents one of the best expressions of 19th century Romanticism in the world. Rising on a steep rock, it is the second highest point in the Serra de Sintra. On July 7, 2007, it was chosen as one of the seven wonders of Portugal, being, in fact, the first romantic palace in Europe, built about 30 years before the charismatic Schloss Neuschwanstein, in Bavaria. From the Palace, the visitor can see a mantle of trees that occupies more than 200 hectares, thus constituting the Parque da Pena. This park has beautiful paths and walks, with numerous garden constructions existing there. There are bridges and caves, garden benches, pergolas and fountains. Greenhouses and nurseries with camellias, rhododendrons and roses of unusual and very rare strains. The entire Parque da Pena is today considered the park in Europe, with the richest and most unusual set of tree species that no longer exist in many other countries and continents where they originate.

The palace is located on the slopes of the mountains and a short distance from the historic center of Sintra. Carvalho Monteiro, through the lines of the Italian architect Luigi Manini, transforms the 4-hectare farm into a palace surrounded by lush gardens, lakes, caves and enigmatic buildings, places that hide alchemical meanings, such as those evoked by Freemasonry, Templars and Rosicrucians. It models the space in mixed layouts, which evoke Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Manueline architecture. Quinta da Regaleira is a place to feel. The fountain of Sabuga in the village of Sintra. Osberno (12th-century crusader) said that its waters soothed coughs, Aquilégio (1726) attributes it qualities in curing “bilious diarrhoea”. Currently, users attribute digestive qualities to it. It is a Fountain, urbanized at the end of the 18th century, between the walls of Quinta do Saldanha. Bring water bottle to fill up for free.

Could have been better.
The guide was 45 min late but she did not cut the tour short. We still had nearly 4 hours. We didn’t buy any tickets in advance and the palace was sold out by the time we arrived at 2:00. I would advise buying tickets in advance. To be fair, it was an extremely busy day and at the end of the Labor Day weekend. We spent a lot of time just waiting in a line of tour buses and tuk tuks. We spent a lot of time sitting around and not seeing much. The guide was on her first time alone but tried very hard. The tuk seemed to have mechanical difficulties. I didn’t think we got the value for what we paid. The owner apologized for the inconveniences. It was not great for us on this day but also probably not indicative of their overall service.

Great driver for Tuk-tuk to Palace
We booked a tuk-tuk on a very rainy day. Pedro took us up and did not only drive us but gave us so much info, history and background. 10/10 for Pedro!

Very unpleasant ride
I still can't believe we stayed on the TukTuk as long as we did. Our TukTuk was we guess very old as it barely made it up the hills. Our guide Palo could not get it out of 1st gear and multiple times he did a wheelie trying to shift gears. This jerking movement was horrifying and very unpleasant. We stalled a few times and we thought we would be stuck. The TukTuk was very loud so it was hard to hear our guide talking. His English was poor so it made it more difficult . Upon being picked up we had asked our guide Palo if he could condense our tour into 2.5 -3hrs. So he understood that we probably won't be going into the castles. He couldn't understand why but yet he just kept driving around in circles. We passed the same area 3x which wasted a lot of time since we were in a slow TukTuk. I would NOT recommend this tour.

Amazing and Funny Experience
We had a great time on tuk tuk . Both the driver and the lady who welcomed us were kind and professional. The guy stopped the tuk tuk in order to give us time to take photos and gave us info about palaces and places. As it was raining he gave us blankets to cover us and the service was punctual as we need to go from palace da pena to train station. I would strongly recommend this experience to enjoy Sintra fully.

Sintra Tuk Tuk Tour
We had a fabulous day with Rita in Sintra! She took us all over Sintra, made sure we had wonderful views for pics too! Rita was super fun and so knowledgeable on all things Sintra! Highly recommend this trip to everyone. From the reservations to the pick up and communications with us before the trip- it was all excellent. I’ve already passed the info on to friends visiting in a few weeks. Thank you for a perfect day! :)
