In 1626 the "Wormer" was reclaimed and became the 1,666 hectare piece of land that Wijdewormer reclaimed. Unlike many other reclaimed lands in the province of North Holland, Wijdewormer was filled with fresh water and there was no ebb and flow. Therefore there was no open connection to the sea. During the 17th century, Wijdewormer became a granary for the Zaan region, where ships were built.

    8. Waterland

From Volendam to Marken we will go around Europe's largest artificial freshwater lake. Due to a great flood in 1916 which washed away a large part of Waterland, leaving Marken with floating houses, dead people, destroyed villages, the Netherlands decided to close itself off from the sea. The Zuiderzee became the IJsselmeer. Lives were protected, but all the fishermen, sailors, and people who made sails for ships were left without work. Many of them tried to establish fishing in the North Sea but this was not possible in the long term due to the distance. Before the closure, the Zuiderzee was an important source of income for fishermen. Especially herring and anchovy fishing. After the completion of the 32 km Afsluitdijk, the salt water gradually became fresher. As a result, most of the fish disappeared, only eel, pikeperch and smelt managed to survive. In this lake we will be able to see part of the world's migratory birds.

    9. Marken

      16. Marken – A storytelling village by Lake IJssel Discover Marken, a historic gem that was an island until 1957, when a levee joined it to the peninsula. In the 13th century, priests and fishermen settled here, cultivating the land and living off the sea. To withstand the floods, its inhabitants built wooden houses on palafitos, a unique piece of Dutch engineering. Today, Marken retains its authentic traditional culture, with picturesque houses, grazing sheep and colorful boats on the lake. To walk through its streets is to enter a story, surrounded by idyllic landscapes that seem to be taken from a postcard. Included in our private tour of the Dutch countryside, so you can experience the history and beauty of one of the most charming villages in the Netherlands.

    10. Marken

Zeedijk Marken The former island of Marken, now connected by a dam to the mainland, is now connected to Waterland. On this route I will introduce you to the special character of this former island. There are so many beautiful historic buildings to see here that almost all of Marken enjoys a protected townscape! On the way to Marken, you can quietly reach it via the dike and enjoy the view of Marken, which is slowly approaching. We will see along the water: on one side the Gouwzee and on the other the IJsselmeer lake. Werven Marken was originally built on quays: artificial hills two or three metres high that residents used to throw manure, grass and household waste on to protect themselves from flooding. Since the construction of the Afsluitdijk in 1932, the danger of flooding has of course passed, but the quays remain, as do the characteristic wooden houses on stilts.

Is Private tour to Zaanse Schans, Edam, Volendam and Marken worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 46 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 1 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Amsterdam, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Is Private tour to Zaanse Schans, Edam, Volendam and Marken suitable for kids and families?

    +

Around 0 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Amsterdam can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Amsterdam and add a light layer if any part of the 7-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Private tour to Zaanse Schans, Edam, Volendam and Marken start and how do I get there?

What are the best things to do in Amsterdam?

    +

On Outty we rank every Amsterdam experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Amsterdam Canal Cruise with Local Guide and Small Group, Guided Bike Tour of Amsterdam's Highlights & Hidden Gems, Amsterdam: Luxury Canal Cruise including Cocktails & Snacks. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Amsterdam?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Amsterdam?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
