Although it rained the...
Although it rained the entire experience our guide was very informative about the park. It would have been nice if he would have talked more and shown less videos however. We drove by the lava tube but were told we would see it on the way back. This never happened. When questioned when we were going to see it Rob said we were out of time! He also told us we were allowed to take the black ash balls and gave us a few to take. They were confiscated when getting back on the ship. We were told then that nothing could be taken out of the park! Looking it up later we found out it is a federal offense to remove anything from the park and we could have received hefty fines!!
Response from the operator: Aloha John, thank you for taking the time to share your feedback and concerns. I would like to address several points in your review that contain factual inaccuracies. First, your statement that "we later found out it is a federal offense to remove anything from the park and we could have received hefty fines" is incorrect in this situation. During the tour, Rob clearly explained that the reticulite he passed around came from our private property, not from Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park or any other protected area. As stewards of the National Park, we take park regulations and conservation very seriously. The material shown during the tour was collected from our own yard, roof, and gutters, where volcanic material naturally accumulated. Rob removed it from a paper bag he had brought in the vehicle; it was not collected during the tour or taken from the park. While federal and state laws prohibit removing rocks and other natural resources from protected park lands, those laws do not apply to material originating from private property. The item discussed was not taken from any park, and no laws were violated. Regarding the weather, we sent detailed tour information approximately two months before your visit. Those materials explain that Hawaiʻi is one of the rainiest places in the United States and that portions of the National Park are located within a rainforest where rain is common. Unfortunately, your group experienced some of the most challenging weather conditions we have seen for a cruise-ship tour in several years. Although none of your group members brought rain gear, we were happy to provide complimentary ponchos to make the experience more comfortable. When we approached the lava tube area, members of your group expressed that they did not want to get wet. In response, Rob adjusted the itinerary and sought areas of the park with better weather so everyone could enjoy the tour as much as possible. As with all of our tours, the itinerary remained flexible based on guest preferences and weather conditions. Our pre-tour materials also explain that tours are customizable and designed to maximize what guests can experience during their scheduled time. We provide up to 30 minutes of additional time at no charge when possible. However, time spent at lunch, shopping, or exploring independently still counts toward the tour duration. During your tour, extended stops—including lunch and independent exploration—used a significant portion of the available time. By the time we reached later stops, weather conditions remained extremely poor, and no members of the group expressed interest in returning to the rain-soaked areas, including the lava tube. The stop at the last overlook should have been 5 minutes, but it was 25 minutes. We modified your lunch reservation to give us the best chance of finding sunshine or better weather. We are one of the few companies that the Volcano House allows to make lunch reservations for that include the full menu. Most companies offer a limited menu, but our guests have access to the full menu for comfort and exclusivity. We know you had a good lunch experience; your whole group was enthusiastic about their meal when picked up. For transparency, all of our vehicles are equipped with GPS tracking and onboard cameras. Our records show that your group received approximately one additional hour beyond the scheduled tour time at no extra charge. We regret that the weather did not cooperate during your visit, but we worked throughout the day to adapt the itinerary, provide rain protection, extend the tour time, and create the best possible experience under exceptionally challenging conditions. Mahalo!

We Flew Across Hawaii to See Kilauea — It Erupted the Next Day
We had an amazing experience with Big Island VIP on a single-day inter-island trip to Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. Our private guide, Rob, was knowledgeable, fun, and made the day incredibly engaging—especially for our 13-year-old. The tour was fully customized for our family and included exploring lava fields, learning about the volcanoes, and even watching a volcano documentary on the van’s video screen between stops. Water and snacks were provided, which was a great touch. We missed the most recent eruption by less than 24 hours (sigh!) but Rob sent photos and videos of it to us which was super nice! A fantastic, educational experience and a highlight of our trip. Highly recommend! 🌋
Response from the operator: Thank you for sharing your wonderful experience, and we’re thrilled Rob could make your day so memorable! Seeing the volcano activity so close to your visit adds a unique story to your adventure. We appreciate your recommendation!

Why this scores 63
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
Private Tour from Hilo to Hawaii Volcanoes Natl Park Mercedes Van: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Hilo.
How much does Private Tour from Hilo to Hawaii Volcanoes Natl Park Mercedes Van cost?
+
Prices start at $1520 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Hilo usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Private Tour from Hilo to Hawaii Volcanoes Natl Park Mercedes Van take?
+
Plan for about 6 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Hilo is not rushed.
Is Private Tour from Hilo to Hawaii Volcanoes Natl Park Mercedes Van worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 63 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.9/5 across 22 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Hilo, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Private Tour from Hilo to Hawaii Volcanoes Natl Park Mercedes Van?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Private Tour from Hilo to Hawaii Volcanoes Natl Park Mercedes Van suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 6-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Private Tour from Hilo to Hawaii Volcanoes Natl Park Mercedes Van?
+
Around 8 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Hilo can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Hilo and add a light layer if any part of the 6-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Private Tour from Hilo to Hawaii Volcanoes Natl Park Mercedes Van start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Hilo within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Hilo?
+
On Outty we rank every Hilo experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Hawaii Volcanoes, Waterfalls, Beaches & Hilo Highlights Day Tour, Hilo Shore Excursion: Active Volcano, Lava Tube, Waterfall and Gardens, Hilo Shore Excursion: Volcano Safari Lava Caves & Black Sand. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Hilo?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Hilo?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
