A Glimpse Into Another World of Jungle Culture and Exotic Food
Bee was our guide for our one day Hill Tribe tour and Kit was our driver, both were enthusiastic, full of knowledge and generous with their time. We so enjoyed the day roaming the jungle villages and learning more about an ancient culture that still exists. As a chef I was so excited to see all the locally grown food and how they cook it, our lunch was outstanding. The village people couldn't have been more generous with their time as well as trying their best to create an authentic experience for us. It's hard to believe people do live like this in this day and age but it was an eye opener to a peaceful existence that could benefit the world. Thanks for such a great day.

Amazing 2 days
Our tour with Hilltribe Holidays was outstanding. From initially making enquiry about what they offered, the communication from Melissa was excellent, giving us various options to suit our budget and what we type of experience we wanted. We travelled in a large , clean 4x4, with our guide Pat (the owner) and a dedicated driver. There is a fair bit of driving involved as you travel to the far north Thai/Myanmar border, which in itself is both stunning and fascinating. Day one we stopped of at a family run elephant sanctuary, where we also had lunch. Then travelled onto a beautiful and quiet waterfall and some hot springs, as well as stopping at various markets to see the different types of foods on offer, so different from Chiang Mai and the rest of southern Thailand that we had visited. We arrived in the Karen village where we were staying for the night just before dusk, so just spent the evening chatting to our hosts, and sharing a delicious local meal using all local produce, much of it from the surrounding forest. The local villagers were extremely friendly and were very inquisitive about our lives back in the UK, just as much as we were about theirs. The girls wore traditional clothing and also worn the neck rings. Our room was a large, clean and basic bamboo hut, with mattresses, pillows, duvets and mosquito nets. They have solar lighting, and offer you torches and power packs for your phone if required. We slept very well, and in the morning after breakfast we had a tour of the surrounding forest and local farmland which one of the villagers, who explained how they use the local plants for both cooking and medicinal purposes. After a delicious breakfast, we said our goodbyes and then travelled a village inhabited by the Palaung tribe, where had another delicious meal, again different to what we had ever eaten before. We spent the afternoon visiting various look out points and stunning vistas along the Myanmar border, and learned a lot about the trials and tribulations these Hilltribes have experienced both sides of the border. We headed south and stopped at our final destination, a Lisu tribal village and had yet another outstanding meal with a local family and was taken on a very interesting tour around the village but the daughter of the family who was lovely. We arrived back at our hotel in Chiang Mai around 9pm. We thoroughly enjoyed our 2d/1n tour, it found it extremely interesting and authentic, and loved being immersed in the tribal life. It was not the cheapest few days, but you get what you pay for and we think it was great value for money.

One of the Highlights of Our Trip – Wonderful 3-Day Private Tour (Great Even with a Toddler!)
We had an absolutely wonderful experience on this tour — it was truly one of the highlights of our entire trip. We did a 3-day private tour without a homestay, which was individually organized to suit our needs since we were traveling as a small family: me, my mom, and my 3-year-old daughter. Everything was arranged very thoughtfully, and we always felt safe, comfortable, and well taken care of. Our guide (Bee - Honey) was fantastic: knowledgeable, friendly, and very patient. Traveling with a toddler can sometimes be challenging, but the whole team made it incredibly easy for us. Our daughter absolutely loved the experience as well, which says a lot! We truly appreciate how flexible and accommodating the tour was, and we would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a memorable, authentic (!) and well-organized experience in Thailand. Thank you again for such a great tour!

Above and Beyond
We had a spectacular three-day tour with Thailand Hilltribe Holidays. Our guide, Bee, was so much fun, very attentive (often answering questions before we ever asked) and went far above anything we could have hoped for. We booked three days and two nights, with both nights being tribal homestays. On our way, we stopped at a produce stand operated by the local Red Lahu farmers and, as we were obviously foreign, a local boy invited into his home. When his mother and father offered to make lunch for us, we abandoned our restaurant plans and allowed ourselves to be immersed in the most amazing authentic cultural food experience. One of the things that stood out about Bee was her attentiveness to the small details, which saved us any awkwardness or embarrassment. She always told us when to take off our shoes, how to properly eat a particular dish, and when it was not appropriate to have a camera out. We let Bee know that I am a painter, and I was particularly interested in any natural dyes, inks, or pigments that our host families use in their daily lives. Although it was an out-of-the-ordinary request, and oddly specific, by the end of our trip, we had found, gathered, and processed four different colors with two different people groups, the Kayan and the Pa Lung. While staying with the Kayan, we were invited to a village new year’s celebration, where we got to watch local kids and adults alike dance, play games, and celebrate. Bee used her local contacts at both homestays to give us far more than we could have asked for. We cannot wait to book our next stay when we are back in Thailand. We would highly recommend this experience to anyone who is interested in learning about local culture and history.

Why this scores 57
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
Private Tour: 2-Day Authentic Hill Tribe Villages and Karen Hill Tribe Homestay: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Chiang Mai.
How much does Private Tour: 2-Day Authentic Hill Tribe Villages and Karen Hill Tribe Homestay cost?
+
Prices start at $1026 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Chiang Mai usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Private Tour: 2-Day Authentic Hill Tribe Villages and Karen Hill Tribe Homestay take?
+
Plan for about 1 hour from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Chiang Mai is not rushed.
Is Private Tour: 2-Day Authentic Hill Tribe Villages and Karen Hill Tribe Homestay worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 57 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.8/5 across 47 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable outdoors in Chiang Mai, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Private Tour: 2-Day Authentic Hill Tribe Villages and Karen Hill Tribe Homestay?
+
No. This experience is sold on a non-refundable basis, so only book a date you are confident about. Similar experiences in the city do offer free cancellation if flexibility matters more than price.
Is Private Tour: 2-Day Authentic Hill Tribe Villages and Karen Hill Tribe Homestay suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 1-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Private Tour: 2-Day Authentic Hill Tribe Villages and Karen Hill Tribe Homestay?
+
Around 16 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Chiang Mai can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Chiang Mai and add a light layer if any part of the 1-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Private Tour: 2-Day Authentic Hill Tribe Villages and Karen Hill Tribe Homestay start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Chiang Mai within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Chiang Mai?
+
On Outty we rank every Chiang Mai experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Half-Day Thai Cooking Class at Organic Farm in Chiang Mai, Full Day Thai Cooking at Farm (Chiang Mai), Thai and Akha Cooking Class in Chiang Mai. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Chiang Mai?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Chiang Mai?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
