What you get
About this experience
As you make your way up to Pico do Areeiro before dawn, the air will be crisp and the darkness will add to the anticipation of what's to come. As the sun begins to rise, the sky will slowly transform into a vivid canvas of colors, ranging from deep blues and purples to fiery oranges and reds. As the first rays of sunlight start the distant valleys and the coastline will start to slowly emerge from the shadows. The clouds that were once blanketing the landscape will also begin to take on a new life, as they change colors from a dark gray to a warm pink and orange. As the sun continues to rise, the surrounding landscape will become increasingly illuminated, casting a warm and golden glow over the mountains, hills, and valleys. The view from the top of Pico do Areeiro is breathtaking. We will then go and hike on a small strech of Levada dos balcões about 2km (30 min. optional) and go for a cofee to really wake up before heading back leaving you a fullday still to explore!

A class above ….
A class above the usual Madeira tours We had a fantastic 4×4 tour with Nico from Up Mountain Madeira. From beginning to end, the day was personal, informative, relaxed and enormous fun. Nico knows Madeira extraordinarily well—not merely its well-known sights, but its landscape, agriculture, communities and the people who live and work there. He is extremely friendly, naturally chatty and full of fascinating information, without the tour ever feeling rehearsed or formulaic. What makes Nico particularly special is his willingness to tailor the day completely around his guests. My particular interest was Madeira’s viticulture, so he adapted the tour to concentrate on vineyards, grape growing and wine production. He took us well away from the standard tourist circuit, stopped whenever there was something worth seeing or discussing, and used his local relationships to give us private access to places that ordinary tours simply cannot visit. This was the complete opposite of a faceless coach tour ticking off crowded tourist spots. It felt like exploring Madeira with a knowledgeable and well-connected local friend. Superb value, hugely enjoyable and genuinely memorable. Nico and Up Mountain Madeira are in a different league—very highly recommended.

A Phenomenal Experience We Will Never Forget
We were in Madeira for 5 days and Nicoulo (Nico) was our guide taking us on many adventures across the island during our stay. We saw the Valley of Nuns, rode the Wicker Sleds, did the Sunrise Hike, went out on the glass ledge, took a walk through the woods, went to the gardens, pretty much anything and everything we could cram into our 5 days there. Our stay was phenomenal and we had a great time. And it was definitely made even better because Nico was our guide and like a long lost friend and he was just positive and upbeat and fun to hang out with. He gave us great restaurant recommendations and was accessible by WhatsApp and texted other great recommendations for things for us to do on our off day when we didn't have anything scheduled with him including introducing us to a friend who owned a restaurant (Bananas) that served the best Prego. If you're traveling to Madeira, I could not more highly recommend any company or guide over Nico and Up Mountain Madeira. If you're reading this review and even remotely hesitating to pull the trigger on booking an excursion with them, just book it, you will not regret it. Easily one of the best travel experiences we've ever had in our lives. Thanks Nico!

Beautiful sunrise
Real nice, relaxed tour with Tobias. Picked up at 7am from our hotel in Funchal in a jeep. Booster seats were ready for our two children (5 and 9 years old) and It was a comfortable, safe journey up to the peak. As a booked tour, we could drive straight to the top while rental cars had to park a bit further away and take a shuttle bus. It’s an easy walk to find a nice spot to watch the sunrise above the clouds. Felt about 0-5C so needed hats, scarves but the view is absolutely amazing and worth the early departure. Then a nice drive to the next stop for an easy Levada hike. Nice walk and ended up at a beautiful view point before meeting our guide at the other end, and journey back to the hotel. I liked the private tour as we avoided all the crowds and got a personalised experience.

Will use Up Mountain Madeira again
We booked our "Sunrise in Pico do Areeiro and Laurisilva walk Half Day tour" with Up Mountain Madeira mainly because we had previosly taken a tour with them a few years ago. Both tours were excellent, outstanding guides, great value for money and as there are lots of tour operators now we went with someone we knew and had experience of. We were not dissapointed. Thank you Nico, excellent comunication, on time and very well enjoyed morning tour. Bob N.

Why this scores 56
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
Private Sunrise Pico do Areeiro Half Day with easy levada walk: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Funchal.
How much does Private Sunrise Pico do Areeiro Half Day with easy levada walk cost?
+
Prices start at $296 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Funchal usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Private Sunrise Pico do Areeiro Half Day with easy levada walk take?
+
Plan for about 4 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Funchal is not rushed.
Is Private Sunrise Pico do Areeiro Half Day with easy levada walk worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 56 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 7 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Funchal, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Private Sunrise Pico do Areeiro Half Day with easy levada walk?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Private Sunrise Pico do Areeiro Half Day with easy levada walk suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 4-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Private Sunrise Pico do Areeiro Half Day with easy levada walk?
+
Around 2 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Funchal can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Funchal and add a light layer if any part of the 4-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Private Sunrise Pico do Areeiro Half Day with easy levada walk start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Funchal within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Funchal?
+
On Outty we rank every Funchal experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Jeep Tour Amazing West to Natural Pools -Full-Day, Porto Moniz, Seixal, Fanal Forest, Cliff Skywalk in Open Roof 4X4, West Tour-Fanal Forest & Porto Moniz Natural Pools Small Groups. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Funchal?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Funchal?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
