    A Wonderful Kyoto Cooking Experience

I had a wonderful time at this cooking class in Kyoto! I thought making onigiri was easy, but I learned that there are many techniques that make a big difference. She taught me how to cook the rice、how salt to use, and the fillings. I also thought it would be impossible for me to make Japanese rolled omelet (dashimaki tamago) by myself. However, she carefully taught me to cook it beautifully. Another favorite recipe was spinach with sesame dressing (horenso no goma-ae). It gave me a new way to enjoy spinach besides my usual recipes, and my whole family loves it. It has become one of our favorite side dishes at home. I learned practical skills that I can use every day, I recommend this experience to anyone visiting Kyoto!

Response from the operator: Thank you so much for your thoughtful and heartwarming review! I'm delighted to hear that the class changed your perspective on making onigiri. Even simple Japanese home cooking has many small techniques, and I'm so happy you enjoyed learning about cooking rice, using the right amount of salt, and choosing different fillings. You did a wonderful job making dashimaki tamago! It takes practice, but I'm glad you gained the confidence to make it at home. It made me especially happy to read that your whole family loves the horenso no goma-ae and that it has become one of your favorite side dishes. Knowing that the recipes we made together are now part of your family meals is the greatest reward for me. Thank you again for choosing my cooking class during your visit to Kyoto and for recommending it to future travelers. I hope the flavors and memories of your bento-making experience will stay with you for a long time, and I would be delighted to welcome you back whenever you return to Kyoto.

    Unique workshop

I had a wonderful experience at Chef Toshiko’s cooking workshop in Kyoto. From the moment we arrived, everything was warm, welcoming, and beautifully organized. Chef Toshiko is incredibly kind and passionate, and she guided us through the preparation of delicious traditional dishes using fresh, local ingredients. The class was both informative and really fun. What made the experience even more special was the picnic afterward by the river. The setting felt absolutely magical — peaceful, scenic, and the perfect place to enjoy the food we had prepared together. Sitting by the water, surrounded by nature and such a beautiful atmosphere, made the meal even more memorable, a tall Japanese bird was looking at us ;-)

Response from the operator: Thank you so much for your wonderful review and for joining our cooking workshop! It was a pleasure to share Kyoto's culinary traditions with you and to cook together using fresh local ingredients. I'm delighted to hear that you enjoyed both the cooking experience and learning about the dishes. The riverside picnic is one of my favorite parts of the day as well, and I'm so happy that you found it magical and memorable. The peaceful atmosphere, beautiful scenery, and of course our unexpected tall feathered visitor by the river, always make the experience extra special! Thank you again for your kind words. I hope the recipes and memories will stay with you for a long time, and I would be delighted to welcome you back to Kyoto someday. Warm regards, Chef Toshiko

Kyoto’s Most Intimate Onigiri Making Experience – Private, Elegant, Unforgettable

We were searching for a private luxury cooking experience in Kyoto and found something truly special. This exclusive onigiri workshop, held inside a traditional machiya, felt like being invited into a private Japanese home. The craftsmanship behind shaping rice perfectly was surprisingly nuanced. Combined with premium seasonal ingredients and thoughtful hospitality, it became a deeply memorable cultural encounter. For those wanting an authentic yet elevated Japanese food experience in Kyoto, this is extraordinary.

Response from the operator: Thank you so much for your beautiful review. It means a great deal to know that you found our onigiri workshop to be such a special experience. My hope is always to create a space where guests can feel welcomed into a traditional Japanese home and connect with Japanese culture in a personal and meaningful way. I’m delighted that you enjoyed learning the subtle techniques behind making onigiri. Although simple in appearance, shaping rice with care and balance is truly an art, and I’m glad that this craftsmanship resonated with you. Thank you also for your kind words about the seasonal ingredients and hospitality. Sharing these elements of Japanese food culture with guests from around the world is one of the greatest joys of my work. It was a pleasure to spend time with you, and I hope the memories of your time in Kyoto—and perhaps a few perfectly shaped onigiri—will stay with you for years to come. Warm regards, Chef Toshiko

    +
