Where the coastal road narrows between the cliffs and the sea at the Dog River canyon, the limestone walls have served as the world's oldest continuously updated archive of military history for over three thousand years. Egyptian Pharaoh Ramesses II carved his victory inscription here in 1274 BC after the Battle of Kadesh — the earliest entry in what became a remarkable 3,000-year tradition. Assyrian King Esarhaddon followed in 671 BC. Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius added his own record. French General Gouraud marked the creation of Greater Lebanon in 1920. And the Lebanese Republic itself continued the tradition — recording independence, the withdrawal of Israeli forces, and the departure of Syrian troops in inscriptions that bring the archive right up to the 21st century. No single stretch of rock in the world records the passage of so many civilisations across so many centuries. Your driver brings each inscription and its story to life.

From ancient inscriptions on the cliff face above ground, descend into one of the most spectacular cave systems beneath the ground — a UNESCO tentative World Heritage Site and top-five finalist in the New 7 Wonders of Nature competition. Two interconnected limestone caves stretching over 9 kilometres beneath the Lebanese mountains — the upper cave explored on foot through a soaring cathedral of stalactites and stalagmites up to 8 metres tall, and the lower cave navigated by silent electric boat along an underground river through chambers of extraordinary natural beauty that took millions of years to form.

Great day out
Our driver Mounaf was amazing, he made sure we felt safe and saw all the important sights. Mounaf spoke very good English and had a lot of knowledge on the area. He spent the whole day with us and we appreciated his safe driving and the amount of care he took with us all day. He's really well informed on the history of places, he joined in the fun with us and also helped us get good prices on things. He recommended a good restaurant for a sea front dinner at the end of the day too. Thankyou Mounaf!

Jeita Grotto is a MUST see
A great day in a country where the UK foreign Office advise against travel . Likely to be because of the high inflation situation. It is safe, the people friendly, like anywhere it needs tourists to progress. I have been in many grotto's. In Slovenia, UK, my youngest daughter swam in the one in Bermuda, Croatia, Italy, but this one at Jeita is the first time I have boated on a lake in one. It blew me away because I didn't expect to do that. The lake is in the lower chamber. There is an upper chamber to explore. Travel between the two is on a toy train. Harissa for the Our Lady of Lebanon area is a dominating place as it overlooks the Lebanese coastline. It can be reached by cable car. I was driven up and descended by cable car. The real beauty aside from the spectacular architecture and well kept trees and gardens is the tranquility because it is a holy place. Byblos has Greek, Roman ruins to see dominated by a well preserved, solid Arabic fort. It has a new town adjoining it beautifully constructed, geared to tourism. My thanks go to a beautiful lady named Georgina for hosting me. She is well organised, calm, speaks perfect English, and tour guide Leila. Speaks English well and is very knowledgeable. Give Lebanon a look over a long weekend, it is inexpensive and you won't be disappointed.
Response from the operator: Thank you for your detailed and wonderful review! We're thrilled to hear that you had a great day exploring Lebanon, despite the travel advisory. We appreciate your insights about the country and agree that tourism plays a vital role in its progress. The boating experience in the Jeita Grotto, the beauty and tranquility of Harissa, and the Greek and Roman ruins in Byblos all sound incredible. We're glad that Georgina provided excellent hosting and that Leila, your tour guide, was knowledgeable and spoke English well. Your recommendation to give Lebanon a visit over a long weekend is greatly appreciated. Thank you for choosing our services, and we hope to have the pleasure of serving you again in the future for more memorable experiences in Lebanon!

Private Jeita Grotto, Harissa Cable Car, Byblos & Dog River Tour: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Beirut.
How much does Private Jeita Grotto, Harissa Cable Car, Byblos & Dog River Tour cost?
+
Prices start at $75 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Beirut usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Private Jeita Grotto, Harissa Cable Car, Byblos & Dog River Tour take?
+
Plan for about 8 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Beirut is not rushed.
Is Private Jeita Grotto, Harissa Cable Car, Byblos & Dog River Tour worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 78 out of 100, which we label "Strongly Recommended". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 22 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Beirut, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Private Jeita Grotto, Harissa Cable Car, Byblos & Dog River Tour?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Private Jeita Grotto, Harissa Cable Car, Byblos & Dog River Tour suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 8-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Private Jeita Grotto, Harissa Cable Car, Byblos & Dog River Tour?
+
Around 8 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Beirut can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Beirut and add a light layer if any part of the 8-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Private Jeita Grotto, Harissa Cable Car, Byblos & Dog River Tour start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Beirut within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Beirut?
+
On Outty we rank every Beirut experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Guided Small-Group Tour to Baalbek, Anjar and Ksara with Lunch, Guided Small-Group Tour to Jeita, Harissa, Byblos with Lunch, Jeita Grotto, Harisa & Byblos: Small Group Tour with Hotel pickup. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Beirut?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Beirut?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
