About this experience

On this tour you’ll delve into Portugal’s Neolithic period (circa 5500 to 3000 BC) and explore two significant megalithic burial sites: Vidigueira Dolmen and Candeeira Dolmen, both located in Redondo, Evora. The Alentejo is home to many megalithic structures, including cromlechs, menirs, and dolmens. It is during this period when agriculture emerged, along with many other significant cultural and social developments. Enjoy some time away from the city, in the Alentejan countryside, where these megaliths live. Your tour guides are professional archaeologists specializing in the prehistory of the region and look forward to showing you some incredible burial monuments from Portugal's past. - Iberian Heritage Tours

Spiritual Megaliths?? We'll never know for Sure!

Four Canucks decided to take this tour from Evora. We figured we could find some of the megaliths on our own but wanted to tap into the knowledge of archaeologists to truly understand the meaning of them. After seeing the roads into the megaliths, we were VERY glad we did. Not sure why Portugal doesn't try and grade these roads a little, but, perhaps it is to keep down the numbers of people visiting them. Turns out that one of our tour guides, Bianca, is a Canuck too! She and her partner, Gonsalo (he who masters the pot holes) brought us safely to the megaliths and the dolmen. While these structures look spiritual, feel spiritual and common belief is that they were intended for spiritual reasons, these true scientists at heart said that we will never know FOR SURE. Outlander fiction aside, I WANTED to believe but, alas, will have to settle for the fact that it is uncertain. Gotta love a mystery. All in all, a great tour. Sure, you can take your rental car to some of these but I hope your insurance is paid up and and your understanding will be cheapened by not hearing the details from two experts.

Response from the operator: Thank you so much for the kind words, Sue! We are so glad you all enjoyed your time on our Half Day Megaliths tour. We hope to see you again!

What should I bring or wear?

+

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Setubal District and add a light layer if any part of the 2-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

When is the best time to visit Setubal District?

+

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Setubal District?

+

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

+

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
