The House of the Virgin Mary is one of the most important Christian pilgrimage sites, believed to be the place where the Virgin Mary spent her final years and passed away. The Temple of Artemis
Artemis was the Greek goddess of the hunt, a virginal protector and the twin sister of Apollo, who eventually replaced the Titan Selene as the Goddess of the Moon. Her ancient temple, built around 650 BC in honor of the cult of Artemis, stood on a site that had long been sacred to the Anatolian Mother Goddess Cybele. The construction was funded by the wealthy King of Lydia, and the marshy ground was deliberately chosen to help cushion the structure against future earthquakes. Over the centuries, however, the temple was repeatedly damaged and destroyed by natural disasters, leading to several reconstructions and collapses throughout its history.

Seeing Turkey through a new perspective
We scheduled a tour of ancient Ephesus and walked off the cruiser looking for the sign e-mailed to us earlier near a Starbucks. At first, there was chaos till we saw the sign. A coordinator directed us where to go to find the Starbucks and there was Fatima with our name. She was native to the area and educated, well-informed and proud of her country. Fatima understood our interests and blended in the most interesting stops and histories. Our lunch was beyond delicious and off the busy tourist stops. We fell in love with her by midday realizing that we had hit the jackpot with our guide. I could not recommend her enough. Turkey is lucky to have her representing the country. And, we were lucky to be her clients for the day.

Great guide, really interesting tour
Great tour with Arif as our guide. He was really interesting and knowledgeable and happy to tailor the tour to what we wanted to do. Pick up was straightforward and we were a few minutes early but he was already there waiting. We opted for the tickets included option which worked really smoothly. We added in the Terrace Houses at Ephesus on the day and that was no problem. We wanted to get back to Kusadasi with plenty of time to spare so we could wander round a bit, again no problem and some recommendations for things to see. I would definitely recommend seeing Ephesus with a private guide, I think it would have been quite a different experience even with a small group.

Amazing
Our guide was on time for the pickup, though we initially missed the meeting point. Once we met our guide was very informative and caring, as my wife had a back pain, modifying the route and pace to take account of this. It was an amazing experience which we recommend, especially as doing a private tour it can be tailored to suit particular needs. The only point to bear in mind is that the flagstones down the quite steep incline are very slippery. We saw several people fall over, and this was on a dry day it would be much worse if the slabs were wet. So be careful.
