Tugela Gorge Hike

I'm a solo traveler from The Netherlands and I was looking for a professional guide to take me up to the Tugela Gorge. Someone recommended me to go with Shane from AdventureTourism and they couldn't have been more right! Shane is an amazing guide who really knows what he's doing. He is a very friendly and likeable man and he has an incredible knowledge about the mountains and about South Africa overall. The best thing is that he sees how capable you are of doing things and he will adjust the hike to your expierence level and whishes. If you go on a hike with Shane I can promise that you will have a great time in the mountains!

Response from the operator: Wow so cool thank you Noud. That mountain s really is something so special. Hope to introduce so many people to the wonder of the Drakensberg mountains and the Tugela Gorge.

Tugela Gorge and Amphitheater Hike

This was just what my adventure starved soul needed after toiling way too long behind a desk! Day 1 started at the very charming Witsieshoek Hotel. The trip on the hotel bakkie to the start of the trail can't be described justly... it has to be experienced! I loved that you took us off the beaten track and up "Shane's Crack" on our way to the amphitheatre and the top of the falls. Your patience and guidance made me grit my teeth and conquer my fear on our way down the chain ladder. Day 2's hike from Thendele along the river gorge with its breathtaking pools and rock formation, and our search for a route to the bottom of the falls made me feel like a modern David Livingstone. I would recommend this trip to any person with an above average fitness level. Thank you, Shane... I will be back.

Response from the operator: Hi Thea Thank you for taking the time off to do a review, i really appreciate it. Yes because you are a good athlete and adventurous i could take you on challenging routes. We also have routes for those that are not so fit and maybe less adventurous. I am looking forward to next time, another adventure.

Private Drakensberg Mountains. Tugela Gorge and Amphitheater Hike: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Johannesburg.

How much does Private Drakensberg Mountains. Tugela Gorge and Amphitheater Hike cost?

+

Prices start at $390 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Johannesburg usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Private Drakensberg Mountains. Tugela Gorge and Amphitheater Hike take?

+

Plan for about 48 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Johannesburg is not rushed.

Is Private Drakensberg Mountains. Tugela Gorge and Amphitheater Hike worth it?

+

It holds an Outty Ranking of 69 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 7 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Johannesburg, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Private Drakensberg Mountains. Tugela Gorge and Amphitheater Hike?

+

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Private Drakensberg Mountains. Tugela Gorge and Amphitheater Hike suitable for kids and families?

+

The operator sets a minimum age of 21. Older children generally do well here, and families should factor in the 48-hour running time when deciding.

How far in advance should I book Private Drakensberg Mountains. Tugela Gorge and Amphitheater Hike?

+

Around 2 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Johannesburg can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

+

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Johannesburg and add a light layer if any part of the 48-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Private Drakensberg Mountains. Tugela Gorge and Amphitheater Hike start and how do I get there?

+

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Johannesburg within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Johannesburg?

+

On Outty we rank every Johannesburg experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Full Day Ultimate Pilanesberg National Park Safari from Johannesburg or Pretoria, Soweto and Johannesburg Exclusive Full Day Guided Tour, Half Guided Day Tour of Soweto And Apartheid Museum. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Johannesburg?

+

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Johannesburg?

+

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

+

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
