Great tour, great host.

Our host was Mo. We found that he and I had been in the same room in 2011 in Shanghai, China. I was an expat from the US at my son’s school and Mo and his KYP group were there doing a gumboot dance for my son’s school. That is the best it’s a small world story I have ever heard. The tour was great and Mo was knowledgeable and would answer questions even that did not pertain to the tour. Just a really enjoyable experience.

Response from the operator: Hi Laurie_k Thank you for sharing this incredible “small world” story! What an amazing coincidence that you and Mo crossed paths all the way back in Shanghai in 2011 and then met again years later in South Africa! We’re delighted to hear you enjoyed the tour and appreciated Mo’s knowledge and willingness to answer all your questions. It sounds like fate brought you together again! We hope to welcome you back for another memorable experience. The MoAfrika Tours Team

Viator difficulty with pick up location 😖

The local tour company, MoAfrika, did a great job. Booking with Viator was a mess, when I booked thru Viator I put in the hotel where I was staying as the pick-up address; the Radisson near the Johannesburg airport. The Viator site said this was not an option as a pick-up site. The Viator site suggested 3 or 4 other locations for puck-up. I chose the first location from the drop down list. I checked the Viator app before I left the U.S. and it showed the pick up address as the one I had selected from the drop down list. Long story short the local tour company did not have this info. I paid $40 for a cab to take me to the pick up location, waited & waited, called the tour operator and found out their guide was in his way to the Radisson hotel. Eventually we got picked up (at the drop down location). Local company = A+. I am giving Viator = D- I had a similar experience with a Viator booking in the summer of 2025. The pick up location for a tour in Edinburgh was wrong & we were able to locate the local guide through shear luck. I would like to be refunded for the $40 I had to spend, unnecessarily, the local guide said his company picks up at the Radisson hotel all the time! Perhaps Trip Advisor will be a better option for future trips.

Response from the operator: Hi Babbar... Thank you for your detailed feedback and for your kind words about MoAfrika. We're delighted you enjoyed your Soweto tour and that our team was able to ensure you joined the tour despite the pickup confusion. We're very sorry for the inconvenience caused by the incorrect pickup information on Viator and understand how frustrating the extra taxi expense must have been. As your booking was made through Viator, we recommend contacting their customer support regarding your refund request, as they manage the booking details and payment. We appreciate you bringing this to our attention and hope to welcome you back for a seamless experience in the future. The MoAfrika Tours Team

A first hand history lesson

This was an amazing experience and opportunity to see and learn about the history of South Africa, Johannesburg and Soweto. Our guide had a wealth of knowledge and helped us to see first hand the impact of historical events in the area, from the establishment of Johannesburg as a mining city to the Soweto Uprisings, end of Apartheid and current development and struggles. It was like getting a semester's worth of South African history in 7 hours.

Response from the operator: Kris_N Thank you for sharing such a thoughtful review! We’re delighted to hear that you found the tour both insightful and meaningful. South Africa’s history is powerful and complex, and we’re glad your guide’s knowledge helped bring Johannesburg and Soweto’s stories to life. Your description of “a semester’s worth of history in 7 hours” truly means a lot to us. We appreciate your support and hope to welcome you again soon! MoAfrika Team

Private Full Day Soweto and Johannesburg Tour from Johannesburg or Pretoria: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Johannesburg.

How much does Private Full Day Soweto and Johannesburg Tour from Johannesburg or Pretoria cost?

+

Prices start at $2624 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Johannesburg usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Private Full Day Soweto and Johannesburg Tour from Johannesburg or Pretoria take?

+

Plan for about 7 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Johannesburg is not rushed.

Is Private Full Day Soweto and Johannesburg Tour from Johannesburg or Pretoria worth it?

+

It holds an Outty Ranking of 73 out of 100, which we label "Strongly Recommended". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 78 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Johannesburg, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Private Full Day Soweto and Johannesburg Tour from Johannesburg or Pretoria?

+

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Private Full Day Soweto and Johannesburg Tour from Johannesburg or Pretoria suitable for kids and families?

+

The operator sets a minimum age of 13. Older children generally do well here, and families should factor in the 7-hour running time when deciding.

How far in advance should I book Private Full Day Soweto and Johannesburg Tour from Johannesburg or Pretoria?

+

Around 27 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Johannesburg can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

+

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Johannesburg and add a light layer if any part of the 7-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Private Full Day Soweto and Johannesburg Tour from Johannesburg or Pretoria start and how do I get there?

+

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Johannesburg within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Johannesburg?

+

On Outty we rank every Johannesburg experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Full Day Ultimate Pilanesberg National Park Safari from Johannesburg or Pretoria, Soweto and Johannesburg Exclusive Full Day Guided Tour, Half Guided Day Tour of Soweto And Apartheid Museum. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Johannesburg?

+

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Johannesburg?

+

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

+

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
