Dujiangyan Irrigation System
This ancient waterworks about 60 km northwest of Chengdu transformed the region. It is an amazing feat of engineering and construction and is a wonder of the world, and is a UNESCO world heritage site. This waterworks is still used to irrigate 5,300 square kilometers of land in the region. For thousands of years, it has helped to make Sichuan a prosperous agricultural province in China. It was used to not only control flooding on the Min River, but also to irrigate an arid region on the other side of a mountain around Chengdu. Visitors to the site will gain an appreciation of the ingenuity and history of people of the Qin Dynasty over 2000 years ago.

A very enjoyable trip!
We visited the Panda research and rescure centre in the morning and saw many Giant Pandas as well as the Red Pandas. We had lunch at this tasty resturant and tried out a few new dishes. We visited the irrigation system in the afternon and marvelled at the technology as well as the beautiful scenery. Daisy was our tour guide and she spoke really good English. She was knowledgeable and friendly. The driver was always there for us when needed. The car was comfortable. Much enjoyed our trip!

Work as a volunteer Dujiangyan Panda Base
This trip was a wonderful experience! You get the opportunity to see the Giant Panda’s very close up while feeding them! My trip was made extra special by Jason my private guide. He is very kind and speaks fluent English and goes the extra mile to make your day special. He took a lot of pictures of me while I was busy with the panda’s and translated every question I had. He is a very good host introducing chinese food to me and making me cups of tea. It was an experience of a lifetime!

Breaching the cultural gap
We had the chance to visit Chengdu for a couple of days. Apart from the day trip to the panda base and the irrigation project, we had the opportunity to stroll around the city centre and enjoy the famous hot-pot in a typical Sichuan restaurant. All this time we were accompanied by our guide Snow from China Highlights, who, with delicacy and warmth, has led us in exploring not only the tourist face of one of most spectacular Chinese regions but also the daily life of common people, which for us, Europeans, is standardly regarded as intangible. There is no need to say that we were bound by the stereotype that China is different, that apart from the language barrier we would face also a huge cultural gap. Through Snow’s smart manner of introducing us various details of daily life, we felt how close we actually are from one another and how similar our problems are as human beings, something which is generally ignored by constantly looking at the diversity of answers that we came with, in various cultures, to one and the same issues. For instance, we enjoyed seeing the cheerful meetings of seniors in central parks – with dancing and singing, the way in which concerned parents handled what they perceived as loneliness of their adult children – see the “marriage markets”, the continuous struggle of man to come to terms with nature – in the irrigation project - and so many more. I can only say: Thank you Snow for such a wonderful experience!

Why this scores 63
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
Private Day Tour: Dujiangyan Panda Base and Irrigation Project: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Chengdu.
How much does Private Day Tour: Dujiangyan Panda Base and Irrigation Project cost?
+
Prices start at $68 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Chengdu usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Private Day Tour: Dujiangyan Panda Base and Irrigation Project take?
+
Plan for about 8 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Chengdu is not rushed.
Is Private Day Tour: Dujiangyan Panda Base and Irrigation Project worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 63 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.8/5 across 4 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Chengdu, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Private Day Tour: Dujiangyan Panda Base and Irrigation Project?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Private Day Tour: Dujiangyan Panda Base and Irrigation Project suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 8-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Private Day Tour: Dujiangyan Panda Base and Irrigation Project?
+
Around 1 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Chengdu can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Chengdu and add a light layer if any part of the 8-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Private Day Tour: Dujiangyan Panda Base and Irrigation Project start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Chengdu within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Chengdu?
+
On Outty we rank every Chengdu experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Chengdu Cooking Class with a Local Market Visit, Private Chengdu Day Tour: Giant Pandas and Jinsha Site Museum, Tuktuk Food Tour Through Chengdu's Local Eats. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Chengdu?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Chengdu?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
