Catamaran Day Trip – Puerto Plata / Sosúa

This was an overall average experience, with a few strong highlights but several elements that didn’t meet expectations based on the description and photos. The best part of the trip was the food and snorkeling. The meal was plentiful, well prepared, and genuinely enjoyable, and the snorkeling itself was solid. Clear water, good marine life, and enough time in the water made this the saving grace of the excursion. That said, expectations matter—and this is where the experience fell short. While the listing references sailing and a catamaran, the vessel we were on was a tired motor yacht, not a sailboat, and there was very little actual sailing or cruising time. The first snorkel stop was only about 10 minutes from shore, and the second stop was essentially just outside the same cove where we boarded, rather than a distinct snorkeling location. The boat itself showed its age. Seating and common areas felt worn, the changing areas were poorly lit and cramped, and the head was extremely small—barely usable for changing, let alone comfort. Compared to similar catamaran excursions we’ve done elsewhere (notably in Greece), this was a noticeable step down in vessel quality and amenities. We tendered to and from the boat via a skiff, which is fine to know in advance. Upon returning to shore, there were several local young men offering to wash guests’ feet for tips. It’s not aggressive, but if you’re not carrying cash (as we weren’t, having planned to tip digitally), it’s helpful to be aware of this ahead of time. Overall, this excursion isn’t bad—but it’s not exceptional. If your priority is food and snorkeling, you’ll likely enjoy it. If you’re expecting a polished catamaran, meaningful sailing time, or upgraded onboard comfort, you may want to consider other options or manage expectations carefully.

First our Cruise ship was late by one hour. They accommodated us but the pick up point from the cruise terminal is almost a mile away. Upon finally getting there, they put us in van and said we were waiting on another group. We said we have a private boat, they said so did the other group. So 45 minutes later we finally left. It was about a 45 ride to the location. Our time was now short so we told the organizer pick us up at 1:15, we know we paid for 4 hours but our cruise ship is leaving at 2:45. The water was not clear, and no snorkeling was visible. They took us to an area where we did the water slide and then another boat came over to offer banana and water tubing, which we did at an additional cost. They also put a photographer on the boat with us and wanted more money for that. At 1:15 we were still not back to shore, the main guy had left the boat and the drivers could not speak English. Thankfully the photographer did and 30 minutes later we were getting off the boat. Then the organizer was trying to make us wait on the other boat. We knew they were not boarding their ship until 5pm and we told the guy, look get us a driver now or we will make other arrangements and seek to get a full refund. It took 10 more minutes for the "helper" to convince him we needed to go now. We literally had to RUN back to the Cruise ship to keep from missing our boat.

    +

Prices start at $1439 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Puerto Plata usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

Is Private Catamaran with crew lunch drinks music for up to 15 pax worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 44 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (3/5 across 2 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Puerto Plata, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

How far in advance should I book Private Catamaran with crew lunch drinks music for up to 15 pax?

    +

Around 1 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Puerto Plata can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Puerto Plata and add a light layer if any part of the 3-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

What are the best things to do in Puerto Plata?

    +

On Outty we rank every Puerto Plata experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Monkeyland and Zipline Adventure from Puerto Plata, Monkeyland Puerto Plata, Puerto Plata Highlights City Tours from amber cove and Taino bay. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Puerto Plata?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Puerto Plata?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
