What a waste of time and missed opportunities
Review of Dennis the guide for “A small group Beijing Night Walking Tour” Friday August 10th. What he had to offer us was a walk down the main shopping Boulevard and Street, a crowded bus trip to a crowded Houtong and a tour of the Bars and Beer and Wine Street. However, we had expected, from experience with other tour guides in China, to receive information about the history, culture and development of the city as well as the daily lives of residents in Beijing. This information was sparsely forth coming, unless we questioned him. Very often, he didn’t know the answers. By taking ourselves on a Walking Tour the following day, we discovered interesting markets, artisans, and typical examples of daily Chinese life. It seemed to us that he had come with his own agenda that was totally unrelated to our needs, age group and interests. It is a pity that he did not follow the tour as outlined in your advertisement on the internet.
Response from the operator: Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback, Yvonne. We sincerely apologize that this tour did not meet your expectations. We understand how disappointing it must have been to not receive the cultural insights and historical information that you were looking forward to. Your feedback about the guide not proactively sharing knowledge and not following the advertised itinerary is something we take very seriously. We have addressed this matter with the guide involved to ensure future guests receive the enriching hutong and street food experience that our tour promises. We truly value your honest review as it helps us improve, and we are sorry we fell short on this occasion.

Expensive for tour
We had the tour to ourselves and Dean was a very professional guide showing us the sights. The route was a bit disappointing as we went through a lot of tourist traps and it wasn’t what we were expecting based on the description. Having said that Dean offered a lot of insight into the people, culture and history of Beijing and was a very knowledgable guide.
Response from the operator: Hi Kathryn, We are sorry to hear that you are not very satisified with the travel experience, this is a small group night walking tour which go through the local famous night food market and very representative Beijing old Hutong area, so I don't quite understand why you said that you went through a lot of tourist traps, can you please send me a email to mention that more clearly? Thanks a lot Best regards, Owen

Tour guide was very knowledgeable...

Tour guide was very knowledgeable, flexible, and patient. She offered a lot of great ideas for shopping gifts, sovenoirs and information about the area religions, culture, history, and architecture. She was even able to get me in a secured area to view. The walk was normal pace and great exercise. I highly recommend this guide and the tour. It will show you the hidden back street night life and capitalism in Beijing.

Response from the operator: Thank you for your wonderful review, Gina! We're delighted that our tour guide provided you with such a rich and enjoyable experience. Her knowledge of Beijing's religions, culture, history, and architecture truly brings the hutong night tour to life. We're glad she was able to show you some hidden gems and even a secured area — those special moments are what make a private tour unique. Thank you for the high recommendation, and we hope to welcome you back to explore more of Beijing's fascinating streets!

This was really good to get a feel...

This was really good to get a feel of the local markets in Beijing. I was solo on this tour and had the guide to myself which was great. The guide assisted with bartering of prices and understanding of what the food on display was! Great guide with local knowledge.

Response from the operator: Thank you for your great review, Shaun! We're so glad this tour gave you an authentic feel for Beijing's local markets. Having a private guide all to yourself as a solo traveler is a wonderful way to explore — and it's great to hear the guide helped with bartering and explaining the local food on display. That kind of local knowledge really makes the hutong night experience come alive. We appreciate your feedback and hope to see you again in Beijing!

This tour was a lot of walking. I...

This tour was a lot of walking. I was not expecting a three mile walk just to get from Snack Street to the Drum and Bell Tower. I loved the destination once we arrived, but walking in China, when you are not use to the streets and the pavement was a bit too much. We had a tour with 7 people and the tour guide went at our pace and stopped when someone needed to rest. I was very thankful the tour was limited to our group exclusively. The guide was incredibly informative and personable. His English was very easy to understand. Great experience, but again..... A lot of walking a little over 5 miles from Sunworld Dynasty Hotel to the end of the tour at Qianhai Park

Response from the operator: Thank you for your honest review, Lisa! We're glad you loved the destinations and found our guide incredibly informative and personable. It's great to hear that the exclusive group experience and the guide's excellent English made the tour enjoyable. We appreciate your feedback about the amount of walking — it's a helpful note for future guests to be prepared with comfortable shoes. We'll also look into ways to better communicate the walking distance in our tour descriptions. Thank you for joining us, and we hope to see you again in Beijing!

Why this scores 57
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
Private Beijing Hutong Night Tour: Street Food & Houhai Walk: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Beijing.
How much does Private Beijing Hutong Night Tour: Street Food & Houhai Walk cost?
+
Prices start at $42 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Beijing usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Private Beijing Hutong Night Tour: Street Food & Houhai Walk take?
+
Plan for about 3 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Beijing is not rushed.
Is Private Beijing Hutong Night Tour: Street Food & Houhai Walk worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 57 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.1/5 across 29 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Beijing, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Private Beijing Hutong Night Tour: Street Food & Houhai Walk?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Private Beijing Hutong Night Tour: Street Food & Houhai Walk suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 3-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Private Beijing Hutong Night Tour: Street Food & Houhai Walk?
+
Around 10 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Beijing can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Beijing and add a light layer if any part of the 3-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Private Beijing Hutong Night Tour: Street Food & Houhai Walk start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Beijing within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Beijing?
+
On Outty we rank every Beijing experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Mubus: Mutianyu Great Wall Bus Tour with Summer Palace Options, Beijing: Top 6 Highlights All Inclusive 2-Day Private Tour, Private Mutianyu Great Wall Trip With English-Speaking Driver. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Beijing?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Beijing?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
