A very friendly driver and a magnificent hike!
We had a very good time doing this incredible hike along the cliffside, on the peninsula. The advice and recommendations from our driver Filipe were very useful to us, both for the hike and for the iconic spots on the island and the places not to be missed.

Never alone in a great area.
The hiking trail is definitely worth it. Great views, great photos. Unfortunately, the path is completely overcrowded despite the hiking fee, which unfortunately takes away the joy of hiking. The hike could be booked at short notice with the provider, but unfortunately not with the tax authority. Fortunately, the provider stepped in. That causes a lot of wasted time. Nerve. One should sell the tour including tax. In retrospect, one must go, but not with 10,000 people. The driver was punctual but should reconsider his driving style. Perhaps he wanted to impress the girls.

In my opinion: must see
Must see on Madeira, worth all the stairs! Views are something else, if you like going up- going down it’s def fun to do. Also: on a very hot day bring more than enough water & snacks it gets HOT :)

The sunrise hike was...
The sunrise hike was beautiful and a relatively easy trail. Marco gave us detailed instructions on where to see the sunrise and options to either come back to the starting point or take the boat to a hotel where you can also be picked up.

Not worth it
I regret booking this. I messaged them ahead of time and they said it would be 4 hours between drop off and pickup, consistent with their listing. The driver also said we could leave early if everyone was there and said or heavily implied he’d be there by around 3 hours later because the hike should be 2.5-3 hours. He didn’t actually pick us up until 5.25+ hours later though so the entire group sat around for over an hour and a half waiting (I waited 2 hours unfortunately and I was not even walking fast). I watched 3 separate #113 busses pick people up while we were waiting for the driver. Pretty bad when a city bus would be faster and more convenient. The driver did pick everyone up from the hotel on time. The hike itself is beautiful. The driver was also flexible and dropped people off wherever they wanted which was nice for those that didn’t want to be dropped at the hotel. In general a huge amount of wasted time though. If you want to do this hike it would be cheaper and more convenient to uber there and ride the bus back.

Why this scores 63
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
PR8 Ponta São Lourenço Caniçal Self-Guided Hiking Transfer: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Funchal.
How much does PR8 Ponta São Lourenço Caniçal Self-Guided Hiking Transfer cost?
+
Prices start at $37 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Funchal usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does PR8 Ponta São Lourenço Caniçal Self-Guided Hiking Transfer take?
+
Plan for about 6 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Funchal is not rushed.
Is PR8 Ponta São Lourenço Caniçal Self-Guided Hiking Transfer worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 63 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.3/5 across 12 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Funchal, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule PR8 Ponta São Lourenço Caniçal Self-Guided Hiking Transfer?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is PR8 Ponta São Lourenço Caniçal Self-Guided Hiking Transfer suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 6-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book PR8 Ponta São Lourenço Caniçal Self-Guided Hiking Transfer?
+
Around 4 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Funchal can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Funchal and add a light layer if any part of the 6-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does PR8 Ponta São Lourenço Caniçal Self-Guided Hiking Transfer start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Funchal within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Funchal?
+
On Outty we rank every Funchal experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Jeep Tour Amazing West to Natural Pools -Full-Day, Porto Moniz, Seixal, Fanal Forest, Cliff Skywalk in Open Roof 4X4, West Tour-Fanal Forest & Porto Moniz Natural Pools Small Groups. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Funchal?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Funchal?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
