Mask painting with friends
We booked the opera mask painting experience together with the nine treasure lunch set. The mask painting was really fun and relaxing. We each chose our own design and spent plenty of time painting, chatting and having tea. The staff were friendly and patient, we had so much fun taking photos together in the masks. Afterwards, we had the Nine Treasure lunch set, which was beautifully presented and a lovely way to finish the experience. There were lots of different flavours and small dishes to try, and everything felt fresh and light. It was nice to sit down together and enjoy the food after the workshop. It was a really enjoyable afternoon here, good food and something creative to do.

Unique experience in Shanghai
We wanted to try something cultural and a little different during our time in Shanghai, and we had lots of fun with this experience! We started by painting our own Peking Opera masks. The staff explained the designs and helped us with the painting, but we still had plenty of freedom to make our masks our own. It was a very relaxing workshop. The dress-up session afterwards was definitely the highlight, we got to put on the traditional Monkey King costume, and the staff helped us with the outfits and showed us how to pose. It was a great mix of learning about Chinese culture and being creative. We also got to take our painted masks home, which made a lovely souvenir from Shanghai. Definitely recommend it if you’re looking for something more hands-on.

Something different from usual sightseeing
A few of us booked the opera mask painting and dress-up experience to do something different from the usual sightseeing. We spent most of it painting our own opera masks, with some guidance on the designs and colours. It was very relaxing, and we had a lot of fun seeing how differently everyone's masks turned out. The dress-up afterwards made the experience even better. We tried on the Monkey King costume and had lots of fun posing and taking photos together. The staff were really friendly and helped us with everything, so nobody felt awkward dressing up! Definitely a fun combination of traditional culture and creativity!
Response from the operator: Thank you for your lovely review, we’re so glad you enjoyed getting creative with the opera masks and had fun dressing up together!

Loved becoming the Monkey King!
This was a very fun experience. Our son already loves the Monkey King character from Chinese games, so when we saw that he could paint a Monkey King opera mask and then dress up as the character, we knew we had to come. It was especially interesting for him to see the more traditional side of a character he already knew from games. He had great fun painting the mask, but the highlight was definitely putting on the full costume afterwards. The staff helped him with the outfit and showed him some poses, and he absolutely loved it! We also got some brilliant family photos to take home. A really enjoyable way for children to connect something familiar to them with traditional Chinese culture. It was definitely one of the most memorable activities of our Shanghai trip.
Response from the operator: Thank you for your wonderful review, we’re delighted your son had such fun painting the mask, dressing up, and creating special family memories!

Fun Cultural Afternoon with Friends
I’m local to Shanghai and brought two friends who were visiting the city here after someone recommended this cultural centre to me. We chose the Peking Opera mask-painting experience and had such a fun afternoon together! It was a great way for my friends to experience something more hands-on and traditional during their trip, and I enjoyed it just as much as they did. The staff were friendly and helpful, the atmosphere was relaxed. A lovely place to bring visiting friends if you want to show them a different side of Shanghai!
Response from the operator: Thank you for bringing your friends to spend the afternoon with us! We’re so glad you all enjoyed the mask-painting experience, and we hope to welcome you back to explore more traditional Chinese crafts together.

How much does Peking Opera Mask Painting & Dress-Up Experience in Shanghai cost?

How long does Peking Opera Mask Painting & Dress-Up Experience in Shanghai take?

Is Peking Opera Mask Painting & Dress-Up Experience in Shanghai worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 68 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 16 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Shanghai, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Is Peking Opera Mask Painting & Dress-Up Experience in Shanghai suitable for kids and families?
+

How far in advance should I book Peking Opera Mask Painting & Dress-Up Experience in Shanghai?
+
Around 6 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Shanghai can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Shanghai and add a light layer if any part of the 1.5-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Shanghai?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Shanghai?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
