Bad experience with Quito Trips in our Otavalo Market one day trip

The overall experience was one of unprofessionalism and underwhelming experience. When we met our guide named Andres C. and driver named Santiago, we were immediately concern about the lack of professional attire and their readiness for our day trip. Andres informed us that the driver was a professional driver which could have not been more than a lie. Our driver consistently drove at more than the allowed speed limit. The roads we traveled were very curvy and had a lot of sharp curves which demanded a greater level of safety, but the cautionary signs of "reduced speed" were not observed, to the point that we needed to yell to "please slowdown". The question we have is if Quito Trip company actually bets the drivers and guides, because after 40 years of travels, we have not felt so unsafe and scared in a car. The vehicle should have been ready for the trip but instead we stopped for gas at the beginning of our trip. In the middle of the trip the guide Andres informed us that he is changing the scheduled sequence of the tour, to which we said No and that we want to keep the agreed-on sequence of the tour. Due to concerns of the driving and lack of engagement from our guide we informed them that we will skip the visit to Cotacachi and return to Quito. Quito-Trips should have done a better job of providing an experienced driver and guide that care about the safety and the expectations of the travelers. Based on this poor experience, we will never recommend Quito Trips

Response from the operator: Good morning, dear Paul. Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We sincerely regret that the tour did not meet your expectations and understand your concerns, especially regarding safety and overall comfort during your trip. We would like to clarify that this is the first time we have received feedback of this nature about Andrés and Santiago. On the contrary, they are usually highly recommended by our passengers. That said, we fully respect your opinion and understand that sometimes there may not be a good personal connection, which can influence the overall perception of the experience. Regarding the refueling stop, our tours usually end quite late, so it is standard practice to refuel before starting the tour to avoid any issues later. However, we appreciate your observation and will consider it an opportunity for improvement. As for the itinerary, our policy is always to consult with our passengers before making any changes. We regret that this situation caused you inconvenience; however, in the end, we respected your decision to keep the originally agreed-upon itinerary. The well-being and comfort of our passengers are always our top priority. Regarding communication, we were informed that Andrés made every effort to maintain communication throughout the journey; however, we understand that this may not have been sufficient from your perspective. Regarding speed, we have no evidence that the speed limits were exceeded (the vehicle did not exceed 100 km/h). Nevertheless, we have spoken with the driver and taken preventative measures to ensure this issue does not recur. We were also informed that you witnessed a serious traffic accident during the trip. While this was beyond our control, we understand that such an event can be upsetting and may have affected your overall experience. We sincerely regret that your experience did not meet your expectations. While this does not define our identity as a company, we remain committed to continuous improvement. We would have appreciated being aware of these concerns during the trip so that we could have taken immediate action and offered some form of compensation or solution. Thank you again for your feedback, as it helps us improve and reinforces our commitment to the safety, professionalism, and satisfaction of our travelers. Warm regards, Pedro Toaquiza General Manager QTA

Otavalo Market & Cuicocha from Quito: Discover the Culture: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Quito.

How much does Otavalo Market & Cuicocha from Quito: Discover the Culture cost?

    +

Prices start at $260 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Quito usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Otavalo Market & Cuicocha from Quito: Discover the Culture take?

    +

Plan for about 7 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Quito is not rushed.

Is Otavalo Market & Cuicocha from Quito: Discover the Culture worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 57 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.6/5 across 9 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Quito, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Otavalo Market & Cuicocha from Quito: Discover the Culture?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Otavalo Market & Cuicocha from Quito: Discover the Culture suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 7-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Otavalo Market & Cuicocha from Quito: Discover the Culture?

    +

Around 3 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Quito can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Quito and add a light layer if any part of the 7-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Otavalo Market & Cuicocha from Quito: Discover the Culture start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Quito within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Quito?

    +

On Outty we rank every Quito experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Cotopaxi Volcano full day tour with all the entrances, every day, Cotopaxi tour from Quito -horseback ride and hike-NO TOURISTY way, Baños Full Day Tour from Quito Including Entrances and Activities. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Quito?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Quito?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
