Worst Tour We Took in Mexico

My wife and I took this tour on Tuesday, July 22nd. Unfortunately the tour failed to deliver on many of its promises. I really debated on whether to take the tour or not, but in the end I booked it because it promised the opportunity to release baby turtles. There are even pictures of people releasing baby turtles included in the tour's description. When my wife and I asked the tour guide about this, we were told that the turtles are not released until right before sunset and that releasing them was not an option because the tour van had to start its return trip back to Oaxaca before that time. When I pointed out that was not what was promised in the tour's description, I received no answer. The following comes directly off the tour's website: Upon reaching Punta Zicatela, it will be time to rest, forget daily problems, or participate in optional activities according to your preferences, such as enjoying local cuisine, taking surf lessons, going to a beach club, renting bicycles, quads, or participating in the release of baby turtles at the end of the day, which will be an unforgettable experience. None of the "optional activities" were even offered. When we reached Punta Zicatela, our tour van was met by a representative of one of the beach restaurants and we were told that if we "hurried" we would be able to get a table at the restaurant without having to pay a table fee. I can't help but feel that this was all prearranged for the benefit of the restaurant. There were plenty of other restaurants on the beach that were happy to offer you a table if you ordered something, no table fee included. We were suppose to have four hour during this part of the tour, instead we were given two. A beach boat tour is also advertised as something that is included with the tour. The boat tour is list in the "What's included" part of the tour description. There was a boat tour offered, but my wife and I and the others that wanted the boat tour were all told that we needed to pay a couple hundred pesos each. Other things such as the two hour "walking tour to admire the local crafts and capture images from the main viewpoints of Puerto Escondido, including the renowned surf beach, Zicatela, and a workshop of looms and typical clothing from the region," simply did not happen or the time supposedly allotted was significantly reduced. In place of this two hour walking tour, our tour guide announced that anyone who wanted to browse the local craft shops had 40 minutes to do so before the van departed back to Oaxaca. I could go on. I can't help but feel that our tour guide simply wanted to get home early. Lastly, I will say that he did not speak English. Everything was done in Spanish, and there were no accommodations made for non-Spanish speakers. A fact that was not advertised on the tour's website. Luckily, my wife is fluent in Spanish, so we were able to communicate with him. Had it not been for her, I would have been completely in the dark. Other reviews of this tour seem to indicate that others have had a more positive experience than we did. Our experience was very disappointing. Out of a three week vacation in Mexico and many great tour experiences, this was the worst.

Response from the operator: Dear Monty, We sincerely apologize that your experience did not meet your expectations. Your feedback is extremely valuable to us, and we want to thank you for taking the time to share it in such detail. Unfortunately, due to the overwhelming saturation in the city of Oaxaca during the Guelaguetza festivities, we were unable to maintain the usual logistics of the tour on July 22nd. This situation significantly impacted the itinerary and timing, and we deeply regret that it affected your experience. We would also like to clarify that the boat tour you mentioned was a private service chosen independently and outside the scope of our included tour activities. Nonetheless, we understand the confusion and disappointment caused by the lack of clarity.Once again, we extend our sincere apologies and hope to have the opportunity to welcome you again under better circumstances. Warm regards,

The beaches and mountains were beautiful, we liked the Dolphins and Sea turtles. Baby turtle release was the highlight

It was a long trip but worth it. It took up the entire day. The driver was open to minor changes to accommodate which was nice. Definitely recommend

Response from the operator: Thank you so much, Daniel! We’re thrilled to hear you enjoyed the stunning beaches, mountains, and especially the baby turtle release — it truly is a special experience. We’re glad the long trip felt worthwhile and that our driver could make your day more comfortable. We appreciate your recommendation and hope to welcome you again for more unforgettable moments! Warm Regards.

Not a good experience, tour operator cancelled the night before.

Tour operator cancelled and I am waiting for my refund, will not recommend, not a good experience, we were excited and cancelled because there’s not enough people.

Response from the operator: Dear Maria Caridad, We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience. Unfortunately, we were unable to operate the tour due to not meeting the required minimum of four participants. Additionally, we attempted to contact you in the days prior to offer the option of taking the tour on the two previous days, but we were unable to reach you. At this moment, we have already requested Viator to proceed with your refund. Please rest assured that they will process it as soon as possible. Best regards. We appreciate your understanding and regret that we couldn't provide the experience you were looking forward to. Best regards,

    Great concept.

This excursion/itinerary is a fabulous concept. Visit Puerto Escondido to then come back to Oaxaca on the same day. I cannot go into details as perhaps they are specific to the excursion I participated in, nevertheless, the execution of the experience needs to be reviewed and revamped.

Response from the operator: Hola Laurean, Thank you for your feedback! We’re glad you enjoyed the concept of the excursion. We appreciate your insights and will take them into consideration to improve the experience. We hope to have the opportunity to provide you with an even better adventure in the future! Best regards

One Day from Oaxaca Getaway to Puerto Escondido: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Oaxaca City.

How much does One Day from Oaxaca Getaway to Puerto Escondido cost?

    +

Prices start at $133 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Oaxaca City usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does One Day from Oaxaca Getaway to Puerto Escondido take?

    +

Plan for about 11 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Oaxaca City is not rushed.

Is One Day from Oaxaca Getaway to Puerto Escondido worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 57 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (3.7/5 across 15 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Oaxaca City, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule One Day from Oaxaca Getaway to Puerto Escondido?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is One Day from Oaxaca Getaway to Puerto Escondido suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 11-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book One Day from Oaxaca Getaway to Puerto Escondido?

    +

Around 5 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Oaxaca City can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Oaxaca City and add a light layer if any part of the 11-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does One Day from Oaxaca Getaway to Puerto Escondido start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Oaxaca City within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Oaxaca City?

    +

On Outty we rank every Oaxaca City experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include AUTHENTIC OAXACA CULTURAL FOOD TOUR, eat like a local., Hierve el Agua 2.5 hours, Mitla, Tule, Rugs and Mezcal for a Day, Traditional Oaxaqueña Cooking with Grandma's Recipes. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Oaxaca City?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Oaxaca City?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
