Old North Church comes alive
Allow time at least an hour. I stayed 2 1/2 hours. Definitely use the auto guide and read all the signage. If a guide gives a short tour, I would recommend listening.

A must see…
We arrived at the end of a warm July 5th day and were greeted with a welcomed smile. The self guided tour was very good as I especially liked the personal pace we set and the interesting historical highlights of it. The last part of this tour ended below where the docent who was there was most knowledgeable and eager to answer a variety of questions about the Old North Church. You will enjoy your visit!

Highlight of the Freedom Trail - North End Must See
One of the main sights of the Freedom Trail, this is the second Anglican church built in Boston in 1723 and today is the oldest surviving church in the city. However, its fame comes from the colonial past when sexton, Robert Newman, hung two lanterns in the steeple to alert Paul Revere that the British soldiers would be crossing to Charles River to move against militia leaders and supplies in Concord. It is a beautiful historic brick church with a white wood steeple like so many other colonial churches of its era. Like the Second Church of Boston, across the Paul Revere Mall that is now St. Stephens Catholic, the church was to serve the growing North End neighborhood. Today the church is still tucked into the North End neighborhood at the foot of Copp's Hill. We visited after lunch and during a festival in the Paul Revere Square. You can choose what to see but I recommend doing all of it that includes, the crypt, inside the church and the audio tour. On the backside of the church, the crypt is interesting as has burials of significance to the Revolutionary War, both British and Colonial. Captain Nicholson, officer of the US Navy under John Paul Jones and presiding officer over the USS Constitution construction, is buried there as well as British Major John Pitcairn who was the British officer in charge at Lexington and died at Bunker Hill. While a couple of dollars extra it was very interesting to see. We then went in the church and took the audio tour. The tour was good with a lot of information. However, it is lengthy, so we hit the highlights for an abridged tour. As for the sanctuary itself, it is very clean and open with clear glass windows and a white interior. It is adorned with beautiful chandeliers and colonial flags and dated with pew boxes and colonial style lectern. You visit for all the history that took place here; however, it is also a beautiful colonial structure that can be visited just for its architecture and setting. Again, this is a Freedom Trail and North End MUST SEE. Be sure to allot 30-45 minutes to see all of it and learn of its history. It will link perfectly with other sights like Copp's Hill cemetery and the Paul Revere Mall on the trail.
