Perfect way to spend a layover in Beijing
We had an amazing experience on this tour. We went to the Great Wall, summer palace and a Hutong. Herbie was a fantastic guide, so friendly and chatty. He was also very knowledgeable of each site which added to the experience. He gave a great recommendation for food in the Hutong which was great. It is great to also have a driver, as well as the guide, to drop and pick you up right at the entrance of the sites, in an air conditioned car with free water. This is really helpful especially when you have limited time on a layover. I could not recommend this tour enough!

Very recommendable and great organization
We had a fantastic experience with this company and we can recommend them At 200%. The organization and contact with Daniel was impeccable. He was very informative and responsive, explaining everything in detail. We had a 12h layover - Herbie our amazing guide met us at the airport punctually and everything went perfectly well. Herbie was super nice, knows chinese history so well and he was also very punctual and mindful of time. We visited the Great Wall and then the Summer Palace. He was always attentive to our needs and he is also a GREAT photographer! He was so kind to send us our pictures afterwards. The driver was also careful at all times and very kind. We had a fantastic day, the only problem is that we wish we had had more layover time to do more in Beijing! 😊 we loved this incredible city and Herbie & Layover Tours Beijing made it possible. If you book with them you will for sure have a wonderful and qualitative time. Thanks one more 😃 Karen & Christophe

Awesome Tour - Great Photos during a Quiet Great Wall and Lots of History to Learn from our Tour Guide
The tour to Mutianyu and Summer Palace has been such a great time, and definitely made our long layover in Beijing a great sightseeing and quite an educational experience on the places we've visited. The private tour was quite seamless, with the pickup from the airport being on-time, and our driver doing a fantastic job with a smooth drive throughout the trip and ensuring that we get back to the airport on-time for our outbound flight by the end of the tour. The overall tour didn't feel rushed, and time was managed quite well at both the Great Wall and Summer Palace, although of course, more time can definitely be devoted to these locations if you are in Beijing for > 12 hours, especially given the vast size of the Summer Palace. Our tour guide, Herbie, has such a phenomenal amount of energy that can give you a boost even if you just came out from a red-eye flight. His fluency in English is superb and combined with his enthusiasm just makes the tour so much more enjoyable than doing a normal group tour that you may find elsewhere. He covered through a good amount of history and answered a lot of our questions with no problems - and you can definitely see his passion in both knowing about the history and sharing that knowledge to his tour group. He's also got a keen eye for taking photos - exactly which spot, and what pose to do, if you ever need a good solo/group photo taken. Would definitely recommend as an overall package, with the convenience, quality of tour and level of interaction that you get.

100% Recommend!!!
Had an amazing day being shown around by our guide (Herbie), great way to spend our layover! Herbie was very knowledgeable and gave us lots of information about the history of the Wall and Summer Palace, which made the experience much more meaningful. Didn't feel rushed at all - very comfortable driving and had lots of time at each location, and Herbie took extra time to get some great photos for us! He even went the extra mile and contacted our transit hotel for us which was a great help. Thanks again!!!

Herbie’s team!
We did the tour with Herbie and it was very great! In a 14 hour layover we were able to go to the Great Wall, to have some local Chinese food and to visit in the end the Summer Palace. Herbie made it dynamic, giving us time to enjoy and taking the best group pictures :)

Why this scores 76
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
Mutianyu Great Wall & Summer Palace Private Layover Guided Tour: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Beijing.
How much does Mutianyu Great Wall & Summer Palace Private Layover Guided Tour cost?
+
Prices start at $80 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Beijing usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Mutianyu Great Wall & Summer Palace Private Layover Guided Tour take?
+
Plan for about 8 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Beijing is not rushed.
Is Mutianyu Great Wall & Summer Palace Private Layover Guided Tour worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 76 out of 100, which we label "Strongly Recommended". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 32 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Beijing, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Mutianyu Great Wall & Summer Palace Private Layover Guided Tour?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Mutianyu Great Wall & Summer Palace Private Layover Guided Tour suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 8-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Mutianyu Great Wall & Summer Palace Private Layover Guided Tour?
+
Around 11 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Beijing can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Beijing and add a light layer if any part of the 8-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Mutianyu Great Wall & Summer Palace Private Layover Guided Tour start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Beijing within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Beijing?
+
On Outty we rank every Beijing experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Mubus: Mutianyu Great Wall Bus Tour with Summer Palace Options, Beijing: Top 6 Highlights All Inclusive 2-Day Private Tour, Private Mutianyu Great Wall Trip With English-Speaking Driver. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Beijing?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Beijing?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
