    Lava...lava...lava

I recommend this combo 100%. If you don't have enough days to take each day one trip, it is great to combine Mt Etna with Taormina, especially since it is not a big city. Daria is very knowledgeable and she was kind enough to take us to Taormina in the morning so we won't feel the rush hour too much.

Decent tour for the local experience

Salvatore picked me up at a convenient location. He also picked up 7 others along the way before our first journey to Mt. Etna. We rode a travel van which was comfortable and he briefed us on what do expect during the 1 hr ride. Due to the mixed group of folks (8 people) he spoke English and Italian. Our first stop was at one of the volcanic caves. I was provided with trekking shoes, a helmet, and a flashlight. The cave was an explanation on how it was developed followed by a quick look around inside. After, we drove towards the base where the hike officially began. This is where the itinerary changed. Salvatore mentioned his hike consisted of a 1 - 1/2 hr trek which was approximately 2000m up the mountain, near the foot of the summit. It did not consist of the hike leading up to the craters (approximately 3000m), so if you are interested in that you would have to pay for a different experience. Everyone in the group, including myself, decided to see the craters. At the ticket booth on base you pay €82 per person to ride a 10 min cable car up to the arrival station, a 5 - 10 min bus ride up to the closet point of the summit, and then a 50 min hike with a guided tour along the summit. It was a spectacular experience and Salvatore was welcoming about it. After the hike, Salvatore drove us to a wine/honey tasting experience which was within the base. We sampled local wine, liquor, pistachio cream, and honey from the local shop. I decided to snack on something from the cafeteria in addition to the tasting. After a 15 - 20 min tasting experience we drove about 30 mins to Taormina village. Salvatore dropped us off at a meeting spot where we were free to walk around the village for 2 hours. Although the village was beautiful, it was not enough to fully enjoy the area. I was proactive and went straight to the greek theater where I saw an amazing view on their rooftop bar, and I worked my way down the village. Finally, we drove back to Catania around 6 pm where I was dropped off at the same location I was picked up. Overall- Although Salvatore is a true local with knowledgeable experience about Catania, Mt. Etna, and Taormina village, I felt like it could’ve been better had he included the prices of the summit hike (€82) into his tour, or adjust his hiking experience by guiding us up to the summit. The cost of his full day excursion was fairly pricey for the commute, cave, tasting, and 2 hr exploration. Despite all of this, I would go on his excursion again but I would pay less.

    Great Day Out

Alessandro was our tour guide and was very knowledgeable on all things about Mt Etna and approachable. Great communication from him prior to pick up. We thoroughly enjoyed our tour and it was great that Mt Etna had stopped erupting from the previous week!

    Great day out

Had a great day with Carmelo who provided a lot of information on the volcano and Sicily in general. You can ask anything. Taormina is not to be missed.

Around 457 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Taormina and add a light layer if any part of the 9-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

What are the best things to do in Taormina?

    +

On Outty we rank every Taormina experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Mount Etna Half-Day Small Group Tour from Taormina, COOKING CLASS in Taormina at Chef Massimo HOUSE!!, Sea View Sicilian Cooking Class & Taormina Market with Chef Mimmo. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Taormina?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Taormina?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
