Explore the Mokolua Islands on this adventurous self-guided tour. The island is a seabird sanctuary and the beach is also a resting spot for monk seals. You will get the opportunity to see native wildlife and maybe a sea turtle or two as you paddle out to the islet. Kayaking out to the larger island Moku Nui from Kailua Beach is for the more adventurous and can take over an hour which gives you a good opportunity to see lots of turtles and flying fish. For the short walk on the island be sure to bring some shoes or sandals to protect your feet if they are not used to the rough lava. Experience swimming in the queens bath, an eight-foot deep ocean water swimming hole on the backside of Moku Nui. This is the best self-guided kayak tour in Kailua, something you do not want to miss!

Self guided tandem kayak to Mokulua Islands.
We had a great time kayaking! The whole setup and rental process was really easy. Mario, who rented us our gear, was extremely helpful and kind. He was easy to work with, very knowledgeable, and gave us some great tips before we started, especially since I had never kayaked before. Mario even gave us a map showing the recommended route to the islands, which was really helpful. I would highly recommend following the route they give you. There are a lot of rocks between the shoreline and the islands, which is why they recommend staying close to the shoreline for most of the way before heading out toward the islands. We parked at the nearest beach, and the walk from there to the kayak launch point really wasn’t too bad, even with the gear. It took us about 1.5 hours to kayak out because we were going against the current and wind, but the paddle back only took about an hour. I would recommend having at least a moderate level of fitness for this activity, especially if it’s windy that day. We were lucky enough to see manta rays along the way, which was awesome! The monk seals were sunbathing when we arrived, so we weren’t able to do the trail, but it was still well worth the trip. Definitely wear LOTS of sunscreen! You’re exposed to the sun for quite a while, and it’s easy to underestimate how much sun you’re getting while you’re out on the water. Overall, we had a really fun experience and I would definitely recommend it!

Kayaking Awesome Adventure!
It was a great adventure! For a novice kayaker. We were able to manage the trip. Would definitely tell more people to do the same as us!

Disappointed
3 adults in a kayak and we had to take it to the beach ourselves on the top of the car! It was not capable of handling 3 adults and made for a cramped and wobbly trip in a kayak! We are experienced kayakers and were disappointed! We Cut our entire kayak trip short and returned the kayak after an hour, and went to do anything else! Didn’t even get to go to the island with the queens bath because it was so tipsy with 3 people we woulda flipped the kayak and never made it! I will definitely use a different proprietor next time

Wow! What a trip
What an experience! We upgraded to a guided tour and it was so worth it! Rob, our guide was great. Once we made it to the big island, he explained the endagered wildlife to us and shared pointed out the vegitation to us. Have you ever tasted the pickle plant? Then we took a plunge in the Queen's Bath! WOW! We are still talking about it - three days later!

Rob's kayak experience
Our whole experience was awesome! Rob, our guide, took great care of us. Our experience began with riding to the beach on e-bikes then launching the kayaks from the shore. We paddled to the island and refreshed with Aloha juice and a delicious burrito. Rob explained the the birds, seals and plant life on the island. Rob even helped us out with a tow when we needed it. We can't stop talking about our trip!
