Quito, Mindo birding and butterflying and Centre of the World trip -Fabulous

We booked this private tour, because a friend of mine and myself had two priorities in Quito. For one, Getting acquainted with the tropical birds in Mindo Cloud Forest and secondly visiting the Mitad de Mondo. We found this awesome private trip. Simple. No tickets - no lunch. It meant we could fill in our own plan. It was rainy season. But we were so glad to leave at 7am to catch the early bird. Our guide, Ricky, was very knowledgeable about birds, he himself was a great bird lover. We saw and photographed a lot of birds. It was very impressive. Ricky proposed a further few options after the birding. We selected a butterfly farm - very impressive ($8:50 entry) a look at the Pululahua crater (well, it was rainy and musty so we need to come back for that), lunch and a bit more birding. After lunch we went to the Centre if the Earth. First an included tour at the Intiñan Casa ($8:50 entry). Well worth it and then a look at the first marker. Early in the morning at 7am we were professionally picked up from our two hotels and Ricky is very knowledgeable about interesting facts of Ecuador which he shared. At 6pm we were dropped back at our hotels; very satisfied with our day. I hope to come back outside rainy season and do Cotopaxi with this company. I highly recommend Real Dreams Tours. They make dreams come true.

Response from the operator: Thank you so much for your wonderful review! We're thrilled to hear that you and your friend had a fantastic time on the tour, from birding in the Mindo Cloud Forest to visiting the Mitad del Mundo. It’s great to know that Ricky's expertise and passion for birds made the experience even more memorable. We’re also glad you enjoyed the butterfly farm and the other sites. We’d love to welcome you back for a Cotopaxi adventure outside of the rainy season! Thanks again for recommending Real Dreams Tours – we’re happy to have been part of making your day special!

Wildlife extravaganza

Francisco was our driver and guide for a 12-hour private day trip to the Mindo Cloud Forest for 4 passengers. He was very personable and informative. We were comfortable talking to him early on and he was joking around with us by the middle of the trip. We got back to Quito later than we expected. This was due to increased traffic during the week of the New Year. Typically, the tour would not take as long. You will want cash, comfortable hiking shoes, sunscreen, bug spray, a rain jacket, plenty of water, toilet paper, hand sanitizer, and a waterproof case/dry bag for electronics. Pack appropriately if you plan to go in the water after your hike. Our first stop, which was my favorite, was a hummingbird sanctuary. You can birdwatch while sipping tea or coffee outdoors. Then a short walk downstairs takes you to an outlook with safety railing. There are tons of hummingbirds flitting around and drinking sugar water. If you like, you can feed them from your hand. Their feet feel like tiny kitten paws. A violet silk longtail? sat on my hand for a few minutes. It was a really amazing experience. The next stop was the hike. You can hike out to the waterfalls and back or take a cable car one or both ways. The hike one direction is about an hour. The cable car goes quick. Even if you take the cable car, you will still need to walk a bit on steep and slippery surfaces. While it is not a super challenging hike, it may not be appropriate for travelers with mobility impairment. Afterward, we went to a butterfly sanctuary. There are both indoor and outdoor garden areas teeming with butterflies. We then had a very good typical lunch (vegetarian options available) and toured a chocolate factory. This tour also included a tasting of several different kinds of chocolate and coffee or hot chocolate to drink. The lemongrass chocolate was our favorite. On the way back to our hotel, Francisco let us hop out to take pictures of the equator monument.

Response from the operator: Thank you for your detailed review! We're thrilled to hear you had such an incredible wildlife experience in Mindo with Francisco. It sounds like you made the most of the day, from hummingbirds and waterfalls to butterflies and chocolate tasting! We appreciate your packing tips and insights on the itinerary. Safe travels and hope to see you again for another adventure!

The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Quito?

+

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Quito?

+

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

+

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
