Communa 13 - 😍
This tour was genuinely eye-opening and completely changed my perspective on Comuna 13. Before visiting, I had heard that Comuna 13 was dangerous and had even received warnings about entering the neighborhood. However, after learning about its history, hearing the stories of the people who lived through it, and actually experiencing the community for myself, I realized there was so much more to this place than its reputation suggested. Comuna 13 has undergone an incredible transformation. What was once known for violence, conflict and hardship has become a vibrant community filled with colour, street art, music, dance, creativity and resilience. There was a sense of energy throughout the neighborhood that reminded me of the favelas in Brazil, but with its own unique identity, culture and story. What stood out to me the most was how the community has reclaimed its streets and turned a painful history into something that brings people together. The murals aren't just beautiful pieces of art; they tell stories, preserve memories and represent the struggles and hopes of the people who call Comuna 13 home. It was also a reminder of how easily we can form opinions about places based on what we hear in the media or from others, without ever taking the time to understand the people and history behind them. While it's important to remain aware of your surroundings when traveling, I left with a much deeper appreciation for this community and everything it has overcome. This tour was so much more than sightseeing. It was an opportunity to learn, challenge my own perceptions and see a different side of Medellín. I'm grateful to have experienced it, and I would highly recommend it to anyone visiting the city. Go with an open mind, listen to the stories, and take the time to understand the history.
