About this experience
Your adventure begins with a hotel pick-up about 1.5 hours before sunrise (exact time sent by 8:30 PM the day before via email or WhatsApp). Dress warmly and wear good shoes, as mountain weather can differ greatly from Funchal. At Pico do Arieiro, enjoy an unforgettable sunrise (weather permitting). Sometimes clouds may block the view — refunds are not possible in such cases. You can optionally hike part of the PR1 “Stairs of Heaven” trail (1.2 km, €3 fee) for breathtaking views, returning within about 45 minutes after sunrise. The tour continues to the Glass Platform at Guindaste Viewpoint, where you can admire the ocean through a transparent floor. The final adventure is the 7 km Larano Trail, a moderate 2.5-hour coastal hike between Machico and Porto da Cruz, revealing Madeira’s dramatic cliffs and wild beauty. After the hike, relax as you’re dropped off at your hotel, ending a day filled with incredible landscapes and unforgettable moments.

Brilliant tour and nice coastal path hike!!!
I went on this trip solo and this trip was so accommodating. The driver was full of knowledge and took time to answer any questions. He waited for us after we stopped for sunrise (the van was lovely and warm) - a lot of other drivers of other tours didnt wait so this is why you should book this one. The time at each stop was reasonable, there was plenty of time to capture pictures, ask questions and enjoy each location. The hike was awesome, socialised with others on the tour while we all soaked in the beauty of Madeira. I would 100% recommend this excursion with your trip to Madeira to make it an awesome holiday :) - Craig

Excellent trip, would recommend
Great experience. Ross is a lovely driver who was very professional. We didn't get to see sunrise due to the weather, but we were ware this could happen before we booked. The Larano hike was perfect, not too difficult and we were lucky ro get great weather. Ross gave us great directions to make sure we could easily find him at the end. I would recommend this excursion.

This excursion really...
This excursion really shows how beautiful Madeira is; it's worth the money. Despite the strong wind and rain, we reached the mountain and saw the sunrise. We drank delicious coffee at a local bar, relaxed, and had a snack with a wonderful view.

This over renting a car any day!
So glad I didn’t rent a car and booked this tour instead. The inclines are no joke, but our driver made them look like child’s play. The sunrise was amazing, and the hike afterwards was great as well. The sea platform was underwhelming, especially because the glass floor is hard to see through. It’s important to note that the driver stays in the van the whole time so the hikes are not guided. Might be something to consider for solo travelers though the hiking routes were well maintained and visited.

Why this scores 77
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
Madeira: Sunrise at Pico do Arieiro & Hike Larano trail: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Funchal.
How much does Madeira: Sunrise at Pico do Arieiro & Hike Larano trail cost?
+
Prices start at $38 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Funchal usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Madeira: Sunrise at Pico do Arieiro & Hike Larano trail take?
+
Plan for about 7.5 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Funchal is not rushed.
Is Madeira: Sunrise at Pico do Arieiro & Hike Larano trail worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 77 out of 100, which we label "Strongly Recommended". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.8/5 across 61 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Funchal, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Madeira: Sunrise at Pico do Arieiro & Hike Larano trail?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Madeira: Sunrise at Pico do Arieiro & Hike Larano trail suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 7.5-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Madeira: Sunrise at Pico do Arieiro & Hike Larano trail?
+
Around 21 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Funchal can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Funchal and add a light layer if any part of the 7.5-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Madeira: Sunrise at Pico do Arieiro & Hike Larano trail start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Funchal within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Funchal?
+
On Outty we rank every Funchal experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Jeep Tour Amazing West to Natural Pools -Full-Day, Porto Moniz, Seixal, Fanal Forest, Cliff Skywalk in Open Roof 4X4, West Tour-Fanal Forest & Porto Moniz Natural Pools Small Groups. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Funchal?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Funchal?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
