The Good, The Bad & The Beautiful

To do this review, I need to break it down into sections I think so that it can be well explained 4x4 tour - we were collected close by to our hotel by a friendly guide/driver, and off we went to collect the other passengers - it was a really hot day and the leather seats were red hot! Once we collected the passengers we set off, our guide was very knowledgeable and it made for a good initial experience. The weather sadly despite being very hot … high up for our first stop “Cabo Girao” sadly it was misty so you couldn’t really see the view … but you cant really control the weather not even in beautiful Madeira and I’m sure on a better day it would of been stunning! After a 30 minute stop it was back into the very hot Jeep again for the off road part, this was through beautiful scenery and breathtaking drops on one side - as we drove along the driver explained that we may need to duck in places if we wanted to stand up and look out of the open roof (nobody did stand up luckily) …. A few moments later a large rock came down the hillside and smashed the windscreen with a huge bang … we were all very shaken, once the guide had cleared the broken glass we continued on our way - I have to say we were all quite nervous at this point as had the accident happened a second later this could of been very serious … health and safety needs to be reviewed here in my opinion … but full credit to the guide for keeping his calm approach! We next went to the vineyard to learn about wine growing and production - such a beautiful spot and the wine & cheese helped calm the nerves! The 4x4 was exchanged for another vehicle and we were driven safely back to our drop off points. I’m sure this was likely a one off event… but it was quite scary if I’m honest … but also well handled by the guide - credit to him!

    +

Prices start at $53 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Funchal usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

    +

How far in advance should I book Madeira 4WD Half-Day Tour and Wine Tasting Experience?

    +

Around 0 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Funchal can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Funchal and add a light layer if any part of the 4-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Madeira 4WD Half-Day Tour and Wine Tasting Experience start and how do I get there?

    +

What are the best things to do in Funchal?

    +

On Outty we rank every Funchal experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Jeep Tour Amazing West to Natural Pools -Full-Day, Porto Moniz, Seixal, Fanal Forest, Cliff Skywalk in Open Roof 4X4, West Tour-Fanal Forest & Porto Moniz Natural Pools Small Groups. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Funchal?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Funchal?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
