We had a truly spectacular day with...

We had a truly spectacular day with our guide, Joel, exploring the area of magical Sintra on the first of our two-day port stop in Lisbon on our cruise. Six of us traveled together in a roomy mini-van at lesser cost than the excursion to Sintra offered by our ship and had a far more personal and comfortable experience than the usual ship excursions can offer in their 30-plus group tours. We visited the colorful and lovely Pena Palace, shopped a little in the town's quaint main square, visited a truly fantastic seaside restaurant, braved the winds at Cabo da Roca -- the westernmost point of Europe -- and returned to our ship at the end of a long and satisfying tour via the twin towns of Cascais and Estoril. There are areas of Sintra literally inaccessible by the large tourist buses provided by the cruise lines for their excursions, and so a private Viator day trip is absolutely the best way to really experience this spectacular area outside Lisbon, with its palaces, gardens, castle, fabulous vistas, windswept cliffs and superb food. Can't recommend it enough.

Although Sophia, our guide, was a very nice young woman, the vehicle she was driving was not. Yes, it was a Mercedes 8 passenger and there were only 4 of us, but the van was a manual transmission and kept stalling, which is dangerous on the twisting, winding roads climbing into the hills. This was not a fully guided tour and she did try to provide some commentary, but with no microphone, only the front seat passenger could hear her. Her employer should provide her with better tools. Unfortunately, this detracted from the overall experience. The sights themselves were great. Sintra is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the Palace of Pena was charming, as was Cascais, where Sophia arranged for us to have a typical Portugese lunch at a lovely, oceanfront restaurant. She did her best, but this tour operator needs improvement.

Response from the operator:
Thank you for taking the time to leave this review. We have received the following response from the operator of your tour:

Thanks for your review. We are sorry to hear you did not have a perfect experience with Sofia. As we felt the luxury car would be too small for your group, we upgraded you for free to a minivan to maximize your comfort and leg room on the long drive. It was our hope this would improve your overall experience. The total tour length can be slightly longer than planned, as we always try to ensure our customers see everything on the itinerary. Additionally, we are trying to find a microphone system that will help improve our guests' tour experience for the future. We can also assure you that all our van is fully functional and we run several tours on it, so it's always kept in good repair. We are also planning to purchase a new, upgraded, van for our 2017 season. We do regret these details affected your overall enjoyment of your tour, but we hope you were still able to enjoy your remaining time in Lisbon.

Sofia was a lovely young woman and she tried very hard to provide an excellent experience. Unfortunately the tour company she worked for did not provide her with the tools necessary. The one year old Mercedes 8 passenger van had almost 100,000 km and was in need of maintenance. The transmission stick was in need of repair and safety was a serious concern for our group. While Sofia was a driver and we did not expect a fully guided tour, she did try to provide some information which has always been our experience even with driver only tours. Unfortunately, only the people in the front seats with her, could hear anything. No microphone and the transmission made too much noise. Very disappointing that you should use a provider of this poor quality.

Response from the operator: Thank you for your review. We heard back from the tour operator concerning this review, and wanted to post their comments here:

Thanks for your review. I'm glad that you enjoyed our guide. I can understand your disappointment but let me assure you that the van was working fine the day before, and the maintenance is up to date. The safety of our customers is our number one priority. The Van we used for your tour is a luxury brand (Mercedes), and is only 1 year old -- so almost new.

I can assure you that your safety was never an issue. I hope you understand that all vehicles can have mechanical problems that are outside of our control, though we are taking steps to repair this van.

I'm so sorry about your not so great experience.

Why this scores 56
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
Lisbon Shore Excursion: Private Day Trip to Sintra, Cascais and Estoril: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Lisbon.
How much does Lisbon Shore Excursion: Private Day Trip to Sintra, Cascais and Estoril cost?
+
Prices start at $82 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Lisbon usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Lisbon Shore Excursion: Private Day Trip to Sintra, Cascais and Estoril take?
+
Plan for about 7 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Lisbon is not rushed.
Is Lisbon Shore Excursion: Private Day Trip to Sintra, Cascais and Estoril worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 56 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (3.3/5 across 4 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Lisbon, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Lisbon Shore Excursion: Private Day Trip to Sintra, Cascais and Estoril?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Lisbon Shore Excursion: Private Day Trip to Sintra, Cascais and Estoril suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 7-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Lisbon Shore Excursion: Private Day Trip to Sintra, Cascais and Estoril?
+
Around 1 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Lisbon can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Lisbon and add a light layer if any part of the 7-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Lisbon Shore Excursion: Private Day Trip to Sintra, Cascais and Estoril start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Lisbon within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Lisbon?
+
On Outty we rank every Lisbon experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Lisbon City Center Tour - The Unmissable Lisbon, Sintra Private Trip from Lisbon Customizable Dreamlike Experience, True 4Hour Private Tuk Tuk Tour: Discover Lisbon with a Local!. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Lisbon?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Lisbon?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
